Saturday night’s plenary featured an unscheduled visit from George W. Bush, the President of the United States of America. After brief introductory remarks on plans to “stay the course in Iraq … no matter where it may change,” the Commander in Chief took questions from veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas.

6. We met Helen Thomas in Washington the day before this
My brother and I had a lunch appiontment with her that she was
gracious enough to sandwich in between a briefing at the "real" (??)
White House on Friday Jan. 12th. She had called the gang of incompetent
Iraq planners "arm-chair generals," and Tony Snow lashed back at her
asking if she was calling the President of the United States an armchair
general. She hinted that her response was "restrained" to say the least!!
My brother and I shouted our answer in unison, "YES!!"

We knew that she had to fly down to Memphis the next day for this event.
Where she gets the energy to do all this (she'll be 87 this year) is beyond me.

BTW, she is a family friend from years back, and she worked with our dad
for something like 40 years, hence the frequent lunch dates.

8. It's weird, but
When you have known someone most of your life, it doesn't seem
to be such a big deal. My dad was one of the most respected small-
town print journalists in Washington for 50 years, so he knew almost
everybody in that town. His friends ranged from Bob Dole to Bobby Kennedy
to Bob Novak, as well as such fixtures as Art Buchwald and Helen Thomas.
When you're five years old, how are you to assess the importance of
people like that when they are over at the house for dinner?

When I was something like four, I used to think my dad had a lot of friends
with the unusual first name of "Senator," and I couldn't figure out why
none of the kids on my block were named that.

I'll tell you this much, if you're looking for something to envy, it's all
the stuff we hear that's off the record that we can never repeat, even on a
post like this one. But I'll tell you this much--it's ALL in our favor!
