Oh noes! Barack was using some humor to make a point...and it turns out he fibbed!

So here's the deal...he told this crowd in Indiana that he once gave a speech where nobody clapped...but the truth is...he received a standing ovation at the end of his speech!

Personally, I think this will absolutely 100 percent be the end of his campaign...what do we do now?

(In all seriousness, if this is the best the Rethuglicans can come up with...November will be easy!)

2. Well no crap
They're gonna clap politely at the end of his speech. That's just common decency.

All the republicans have for the general is

1) Reverend Wright said God Damn America!
3) Obama knows a guy who did some bad things when Obama was in diapers!
4) The auto makers DID give him a polite clap at the end of his speech in Detroit!

He's gonna make em look silly.

18. no shit
If that's all they have against Obama, well bring it on. The GOP has Iraq, Katrina, a recession etc etc hanging around their necks. If they really think a freaking flag lapel pin is going to win them this thing, well, good luck with that.

13. Thank You...
I was just about to say that. Anyone that's listened to a Barack Obama speech knows the difference between genuine, raucous applause and "Yeah, yeah, yeah, get the hell off the stage applause". lol

That was the latter. What he simply meant was it was met with no enthusiasm. And hell, considering the response that he's now used to getting that little spattering of applause probably did sound like crickets to him.

I thought he delivered another speech later that wasn't really well received in Detrioit?

17. Desperate much?
They count a smattering of "Are you done yet?" claps as contradiction to a line that was a freaking joke in the first place?

This campaign's gonna be easier than I thought.

19. Some interesting comments...
Erm... I'm sorry, but that video is misleading.

The clips from the speech in that video are from the END of the speech. Of course he gets some applause then.

But it's not like he's hiding anything - a video of the whole speech was uploaded by his campaign. Watch it -
http://youtube.com/watch?v=j1nno1El3-g - and what do you know, the room IS quiet. You can hear people cough.

True, there are a couple of points where he gets some mild applause. It would be incredible if there was no applause at all anywhere in the speech, particularly when he's talking about preserving jobs in the auto industry, but at many key points, like right after that when he talks about fuel efficiency standards - complete silence.

Simply put, his comment that the room got really quiet is true. It did.

This is an absurd comparison. Sen. Obama's speech in Detroit was definitely poorly received by industry insiders:

"Obama talks tough on Detroit
Criticism of auto industry could make winning support an uphill battle":

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080514/BUSINESS01/805140387/1014

"Obama's Tough Talk Backfires in Motown":

"Bill Ford, Jr. Miffed by Obama's Criticism of Auto Industry":

Dear Don and Andrew,

I wonder if you consider yourselves objective journalists. Judge for yourselves -- here is the complete speech:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=j1nno1El3-g

And here are commentaries written at the time the speech was delivered by
(1) Newsweek:http://www.newsweek.com/id/34740

(2) Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,277013,00.html

Having seen the video and read through both articles, I think he is right and you are wrong.

Yeah, a standing ovation WHEN HE CONCLUDED HIS SPEECH. Sounded like he got little more than "pity applause" for his line about increasing fuel-efficiency to me.

This is stupid, and the premise that it's the equivalent of Hillary's sniper-fire comment is absurd.
