Joe Lieberman and the Florida recount

The Jed Report Mon May 26

From Recount, here's the unfolding of Joe Lieberman's capitulation to Bush lawyers on counting unpostmarked,
undated, unsigned overseas ballots received after election day:

Overall, overseas ballots received after election day boosted Bush's total by 739 votes. (Gore actually lead Bush by 202 votes in the ballots cast and received on or before election day.) Of the 2,411 late ballots, 680 were later determined to have been illegally counted by The New York Times.

An analysis by Princeton and Harvard researchers found that if these 680 illegal ballots hadn't been counted, Bush's final margin would have been closer to 251 votes. That probably wouldn't have been a big enough difference to swing the election even if SCOTUS hadn't stopped the recount and nothing else had changed, but it does make it all the more clear that Al Gore actually received more votes than George Bush on election day -- even when you ignore GOP voter supression tactics or the butterfly ballot.

And in the context of the recount, it pretty much killed Gore's chances of winning. As Kevin Spacey says sarcastically at the end of the scene: "Thank you Joe Lieberman."

18. Yes. They explained it fairly well.
They didn't get into it all, though, and showed why the Gore campaign didn't raise the issue (because you can't get back votes that weren't ever cast).

But the preacher who wasn't allowed to vote was shown while Bush was thanking all those that did vote for him and "all those who didn't." GREAT moment.

46. Oh, gosh, I liked that part.
It really illustrated the difficulty that the older Palm Beach residents had with the ballot. And when you combine that with Florida law cited later that states that votes should be counted when the clear intent of the voter can be determined... Even Pat Buchanan could determine the clear intent of those voters!

"The system worked," said James Baker close to the end. This movie shows clearly how the system does not work. And it still doesn't.

I haven't heard any announcement of a release date for the DVD yet, but it is pretty much a 100% guarantee that it will be released eventually. My guess is it will probably be available sometime within the next year.

If (hopefully "when") the Bush administration is brought up on war crimes charges, Holy Joe needs to be there right along with them. He's a Republican--and an extreme one at that--and such a horrible excuse for a human being. He's worse than any of the Republicans, because at least they have the decency to stab us from the front. Hell, even Cheney shot that guy in the face, not the back.

If we only knew?

Hell, I knew how slimy he was as soon as he came out criticizing Bill Clinton about the Lewinsky affair. I was only 16 then!

He also railed against music, going so far as to say that Marilyn Manson was somehow responsible for the Columbine massacre... it was almost as stupid as the PMRC's crusade.

Eight years of prosperity had me forgive Al Gore for the PMRC. But there was no way that I could vote for Lieberman. So I wrote Gore in with Paul Wellstone instead.

DLC also. And remind yourself which of the DLC people went to CT to support Joe against someone who would have put a good DEMOCRAT in that seat, not a Republican. I hope there are plenty of books telling the truth about him.

Maybe the Senators who went to support him in CT weren't all DLC - I'd like to know for sure - we've got to not allow the DLC to run the Party. We've had 18 solid years of their crap.

6. Gore's biggest mistake
He bought the Republican propaganda that Clinton was radioactive and picked Lieberman to create distance from Clinton. Clinton left office with historically high approval ratings. Maybe Gore has a math issue. Joe Lieberman's first senate campaign was financed by William Buckley and his last one was financed by the Republican Party. He's a Pox(deliberate typo) News favorite and almost always vote with the Republicans.
He failed to understand that the vast majority of those residing south of the Mason/Dixon line would never consider voting for anyone whose wife is named Hadassah. Tennessee voted for Bush. If a candidate loses his/her home state the election is over.
Anyone who doesn't recognize this creep's Machiavellian character isn't paying attention.
Joe Lieberman needs his foreskin reattached without anesthesia

17. Links for Gore victory in 2000
First, here is an article from the New york Times. You have to read this one carefully, though. The headline, and most of the article, gives the impression that Bush legitimately won Florida. Actually, what it says is that, if the proposed *limited* recounts at the time had proceeded to their conclusion, Bush would have won anyway. HOWEVER... if you read further, you'll see that if *all* Florida votes had been recounted (which no one at the time was proposing, because of how long it would have taken), Gore would actually have won.

53. I still remember that article. And there were copycat articles in the WP, by the AP, and others.
All the articles were deliberately skewed to read as if Bush had the most votes. But if you read the articles carefully, it was clear that Gore was the real winner.

Man, the media in this country is disgusting.

To clarify... when I said no one at the time was proposing a full statewide recount, I meant that neither Gore nor Bush were asking for that.

was like watching one of the 911 movies, it was that draining. Being a Dade County resident, made it even more aggravating. The one bright spot: the DEAD ON portrayal of that ghoul, Katherine Harris by Laura Dern. She nailed it, it was hilarious. By the end of the movie, I needed some Hennessey.

When Warren Christopher (John Hurt), trying to placate an upset Ron Klain (Kevin Spacey) says "Gore is still young. He can run again." This whole incident proved so draining on his family and himself that he never sought public office again. We had a genuinely good person there, and he got thrown away like a used kleenex.

God damn, that movie was tough to watch. I didn't want to spend the next couple of days upset, and here I am.
