Election night 1968 (11/06/1968) from The Huntley-Brinkley Report. Nixon just edges out Humphrey in an election closer than 1960 I believe. Illinois was just called for Nixon which put him over.

1. The 1968 election was crazy.

Nixon won the popular vote by only 511,944 votes (less than 1% of the entire vote), yet he KILLED Humphrey in the electoral college, winning 301-191.

10. Nixon won several big states by tiny margins...
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 12:21 PM by King Bacon Fat
California (40) by 3.08%.

Ohio (26) by 2.28%.

New Jersey (17) by 2.13%.

Missouri (12) by 1.13%

Put these four in Humphrey's column and he'd have won.

2. They don't seem too happy, do they?
Or maybe just tired. Thanks for sharing this vintage political clip.

3. I think a little of both ....
I should have Nixon's speech up tomorrow (lots of creepy McCain-like smiles) and I'll try to have the Humphrey concession speech and the round-table discussion at the end of the broadcast.

Edwin Newman made it clear he saw no mandate or love for Nixon in the results.

5. Now that was a news team
Those were the days when an American could watch a network newscast and feel ha had an overview of what happened during the day.

6. I remember watching this broadcast, I was in my first term of grad school
...and thought then that that although Nixon said he had a secret plan to end the Vietnam War it was no secret he was going to accelerate the war with all his "Peace with Honor" bullshit during his campaign. Thanks for posting

8.  But All Those Bells and Whistles are Gone
And I don't miss them - nor do I miss the color, and to think that Huntley and Brinkley presented this information without flash-backs and on-the-scene reporting clips from the man in the street in Chicago.

IMHO for all the gains that we have in the entertainment world of high-tech news reporting, we have lost exponentially in substance of the news broadcasts as well as the integrity of the news reporters.:banghead:

9. Arthur Bremer and George Wallace - Déjà Vu all over again
Watching those results -- I can see why some argue that George Wallace was the one candidate The Committee to Re-Elect Nixon did not want back in the mix --
