22. I liked it when she schooled Buchanan about conservative thought.
"Conservative opinion is more diverse than you might think," she chirps, apparently unaware that she is speaking to a man who has been a significant part of the conservative movement since long before she was born.

Cool? Try arrogant as hell.

Maybe I could give Ted Kennedy some tips on the fine art of Liberalism while we're all exercising our giant egos here, lol. Say what you will about Pat Buchanan, but he's a viable conservative and a big part of modern conservatism's history.

28. NYT magazine found one...
One friggin re-punk-lican and decided there was a 'contingent.' Never mind the fact that any serious analysis or survey of punk bands will find exactly the opposite, with most Punks seeing the Democrats as too damned conservative.

Two NYT shmuchks hawking a stupid book. Oh and how many times can the frigging moderators say 'cool' in two minutes? I swear it is almost a parody of coverage. When will the media become too stupid for all of humanity? What happens then?

32. Absolutely

I can name you ONLY TWO punks that I know of that are Conservative...One guy from the Ramones, one guy from the Dickies. That's it.

I play in a punk band and our main songwriter is something of an anarcho-Leftist. Our lyrics are all political, and we spend a lot of time bitching about the Democrats selling out.

12. If she had a personality she might be pretty hot
Their personalities fall into the vanilla pudding dustmop category, if that even makes sense. She's attractive, but definitely not cool.

Joe Scarborough is kind of cool. He's done skits for The Daily Show that were hilarious. Yeah he can be an asshole, but he has a bit of coolness to him. Tucker? Yeah, Tucker is cool for a guy whose head you might flush in a toilet.

27. I do think they miss the point because, well Republicans aren't conservative
The mythical notion of "Conservatism" doesn't really exist in the modern era of Movement Conservatism. The GOP is highly radical, not conservative. They are more authoritarian than anything. The term "Conservative" is always used by Republicans as a non-pejorative that makes them look and sound better than they really are. It allows them to contrast the pejorative use of the word "Liberal" and to also dismiss all the flaws of Republican leadership. George W. Bush was a disaster? Well yeah, he wasn't "Conservative", that's why. The GOP ran up massive deficits, well they just aren't Conservatives. The Republican Party has never balanced a budget, they never show fiscal restraint, there really isn't any such thing as a "fiscal conservative" unless you want to count certain elements of the Democratic Party. But the GOP clings to that notion because it allows them to portray their disastrous governing record in a better way.

31. Punk Republicans...LMMFAO
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 04:27 PM by kwolf68
Music and punk fan here.

Johnny Ramone was a Conservative and still is. I think one of the Dead Kennedys guys has become a Righty and Leonard Phillips (or whoever) from the Dickies is Conservative.

Outside of that absolutely not. Punk Rock is pure leftist in ideology and at times is anarachistic (my band is sorta like that). The punks do NOT like and/or support the establishment, they loathe conformity, and fascism.

Punk rock was born out of rebellion against mainstream society. As Iggy Pop (a godfather of punk) said, he hated the whole American dream. Punk was a pure social movement as well. In the UK, bands like the Pistols and Clash spoke to the politics of the times, class warfare, monarchy.

Punk rebelled against the corporatization of music. Back in the states, artists like Richard Hell, Blondie, Patty Smith, and the Talking Heads ushered in a completely free-form expressive musical force that transcended genre (to include punk) and rejected the conventional wisdom of what is 'good music.' In short, the punks played music for the idea of music and not just for dollar signs.

Now that punk has become a house-broken commodity, to be sure you'll find all kinds of shit punk to appeal to as many potential consumers as possible. This is what corporate America in control of music does, it prostitutes it. And yes, at some point there may be a prominent 'punk band' that will come out and rant and rave about taxes being too high, too many immigrants, abortion is murder, etc.

This band may look...may sound punk, but WILL NEVER BE PUNK. EVER. Punk does not necessarily have to be Leftist in principle, but it can NOT ever be a mouthpiece for right-wing theology, because so much of what fueled punk's ascent from the dirty streets of NoCal, SOCal, NYC, Brooklyn, the UK, etc...was a pure rejection of the paradigm and ideology of Conservatism.

Republicans are NOT punk. EVER.

It's the motherfucking Republicans that either beat up punks in high school or completely denigrated and rejected them in mainstream society. Now that 'punk is cool' (to them because corporate America says so) it's time to jump in on that bandwagon. Go the fuck away. You didn't want us in the 1970s and 1980s, and we don't fucking want you now.

34. You know

I don't get it. What the hell is the point of this book anyway? Even though us Liberals know Conservatives are not cool, we don't go around saying it do we? How many times has a Liberal author written a book about it? I can hardly remember anything EVER being said about said 'coolness' of Conservatives.

So what on earth would these people write a book like this?

You know why? Because they know they aren't cool. Hey guys...no matter how many times you say, "we're cool...Ted Nugent is one of us', the fact is you aren't cool. Just accept it and leave the cool stuff (art, music, comedy) to us Lefties.
