It could be that Schueneman pulled a classic old neocon snake oil salesman thing and led Saakashvili to believe that he had more influence than he does in the USA. It could be that in letting Georgia he had McCain's ear they thought they would have Bush's support too, in a way like the pro-USA side had in the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine. Georgia bet on a weak group of people. With Gates around, for example, and Bolton and Feith and Wolfie gone, the true believer neocons aren't as powerful as they once were. Now this is not to say a guy like Cheney isn't dangerous, but as whacked out as he is, Cheney isn't as off the wall as either McCain or Schueneman, at least I don't think so. People kind of don't realize just how insane McCain's foreign policy ideas are, as Pat Buchanan said, he'd make Cheney look like Gandhi. McCain looks like he'd start another Cold War, now what is the use of that? It makes no sense.

Beyond naivety... Does Georgia truly believe $800,000 would buy American influence? Damn, they maybe be deluded imperialists but they ain't cheap. Seriously, Georgia brought this misery upon themselves.
