1. It's hard to tell who's "full of shit" these days.
This video came from "Russia Today"? That certainly isn't objective, either.

3. I'm sure Russia Today is more accurate. It's state owned.
Corporate media is well.. corporate.

7. It's state-owned so it's more reliable?
Oh. My. God.

BTW, "state-owned" in Russia also means corporate. Russia's oil and gas companies are major media stakeholders and are virtually indistinguishable from the "state."

9. lol
i know right ? why ANYBODY would believe anything the state ran media of russia said is beyond me.

you have three loosely fascist governments, all with agenda filled media, trying to get their side to be the morally justifiable side...

its like picking which scorpion you want to sting you in the penis.

11. Both sides are full of shit, of course
Saakashvili is going to claim looting, raping, and wholesale gutting of cute little babies. Russia is going to show rosy pictures of an intact city and boast about purely antimilitary strikes that never go wrong and hit a civilian target by mistake.

You're better off reading the BBC. They've actually been pretty evenhanded in this one.

2. The propaganda coming out of CNN has been absolutely jaw-dropping.
And, funny, I don't remember all the "heart-wrenching" video of civilian deaths and bleeding limbs and destruction and anguish of Iraqis when WE were bombing Iraq. Yet every day, there's that dude with the "blogger" angle on CNN, telling us how bad we should feel for the Georgians, telling us about all the atrocities they're going through at the hands of the Russians, showing us pictures of the wounded. We can't even see our OWN dead and wounded soldiers in Iraq, but we can see wounded Georgian soldiers--funny how that works. The manipulation of public sentiment is so blatant, it's sickening.

4. Really I'd rather see a report from BBC or Al Jazeera
The American "news" networks have shown what their side in this conflict is and so has Russia Today. I don't trust either to present a fair and accurate view. I live in Alabama so I could get my nose bloodied for saying I would rather watch Al Jazeera (or even BBC) but I would trust what they have to say more.

5. "Our propaganda is wrong so their propaganda must be right ..."
A dumb response. The fact is that not even nonpartisan human rights organizations have anything like a full picture now, and we on DU certainly can't claim to. Probably both sides committed atrocities, but at the moment we don't really know what happened or even what's happening.

Putin's Russia is a dismal kleptocracy with a largely captive press. RTV doesn't come close to being a reliable source.

18. Our side? We are the peons, like the peoples of Georgia and Russia. WE don't have a ball
in this game except as to the consequences which have the potential to be mind-staggeringly, colossally horrendous.

The players are Russia's government (P.M.Putin -- former head of the KGB and his hand-picked successor Pres. Med.), the Georgian Pres., Georgie Bush, his cabal of politiicians and (petro-chemical-military-industrial complex) corporate owners, and assorted others.

17. AP seems to agree with Russia Today
Russia Today is the source of the tape. I found this in an Aug. 15 Associated Press report:

An uneasy calm in a key Georgia city
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080815/ap_on_re_eu/georgia_russia

(References to violence/destruction in bold. The article says that militia form S. Ossetia and Russian volunteers chased the local police off and shoved some people around but that the Russian Army troops calmed things down.)

"As diplomats try to get a cease-fire agreement between Georgia and Russia signed and put into place, an uneasy kind of calm has settled on Gori, occupied by the Russians and situated just south of South Ossetia.

"Russian armored vehicles rattle down near-empty streets, and the few remaining residents line up for bread and talk with the soldiers, who have restored a semblance of order. Many of the people who are left are rattled or frightened.

"Most buildings appear intact, though a few on the outskirts were burned. Electricity is scarce, and there are very few people left, most of them men or elderly. Younger people fled into the mountains or to Tbilisi."

AND

"Garadzim Tamgiashvili, 46, an unemployed electrician with graying red hair, said there was a lot of looting by South Ossetians and Russians from the North Caucasus before the Russian military arrived. He said they killed civilians.

"He said the Russian soldiers told him they planned to "give it to the Americans."

"We know this is a war between the West and Russia," he said.

"Residents reported atrocities in the villages between Gori and Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian provincial capital. Outside Gori, an Associated Press reporter saw a burning wheat field. In the village of Tirdznise, the body of a Georgian soldier lay swollen in the heat."
-----------------------------
That wheat field fire might be what was on the background of the CNN report.

If the city was devastated, AP's reporter didn't seem to notice.
