A hauntingly sad, but well done, video. It can be easy to forget what the hatred that Hardaway espoused can lead to.

1. I don't understand this stuff.........
To quote Janis Ian, "hearts have no colour and love has no sex, so love where you can and f*** all the rest."

2. I remember when the Shepard case first broke
There were reports that he had provoked the attack and while I of course thought his murder was a heinous crime I believed that he should've been more careful. When I learned the truth - watching a movie about the tragedy that aired on MTV - I was ashamed. I thought that gay people were pretty well accepted in society by then but I was apparently wrong. I woke up so maybe there's hope for others but it sometimes seems that things have gotten worse, especially with all the nonsense about denying gay people the right to marry. There is much that needs to be done to get this country back to where it should be but let's not sacrifice the rights and security of anyone to get there. Let's not delude ourselves into thinking that that sort of bargain for political power would make victories worthwhile. Let's not forget.

3. Even if the reports that he had made a "pass" at someone were true I don't believe that
Edited on Wed Feb-21-07 09:20 PM by kikiek
should be enough to provoke someone. And if being hit on by someone you're not interested in is just cause, our cities should be lined with dead straight men who have hit on women who aren't interested and find them repulsive.

5. I agree with you
By thinking he should've been more "careful" I was accepting the prospect that he was to some extent responsible for his fate.

6. I am sorry if I made it sound like you were saying anything else. I didn't mean that.

7. Don't apologize. I wasn't very clear.
That was an accurate description of my feelings at the time. Rereading my post I may have given an impression that I was still ok with "blaming the victim". It's an insidious meme and needs to be squashed at every opportunity.

4. It is natural to want to think that victims brought this on themselves
for then, we can't be victims. Truth is, we all do things that could lead to crime from one time to another. I have no idea if Shepard hit on his killers. I also don't care if he did. Women don't get to kill straight men who hit on them, so why should straight men?

9. So it was not classed as a hate crime.
This is so god damned sad..... and it makes me angry. Though I am quite heterosexual, if there were a homosexual version of the Million Man March, I would sure as hell be there.

11. I watched in memory of those who were killed...
God bless them, and those who continue to be hurt and killed. I pray I never have to face such a horribly painful end, but I want all those who support gay people of all 'types' and all of us 'gay' (GLBT) folk, to know I love you....
