I'm ten years younger than he is, and they never taught us to type in school. I had to teach myself when I was in 8th grade.

There was also a kind of gender thing going back in the 50's. Girls were encouraged to learn to type so they could become secretaries if nothing better came along. Boys avoided it because it was seen as unfitting for an alpha male -- at best they'd be bosses with secretaries of their own to take dictation, or at worst they'd be factory workers with no need for typing.

So I suspect that McCain is okay with anything where he can just push buttons, or even do a little hunt-and-peck typing. But he can't use a keyboard and would just feel demeaned and frustrated if he tried to learn.

2. My 74 yr old mother knows how to use email...

In this day and age, there is no excuse for someone in mclame's position to not know how to use an email program. Sure, you might not know the ins and outs of setting up your preferences, but addressing, writing, sending and reading email? C'mon!!!

But then I am a person who likes to know what's going on in the world we live in. The pitiful thing about McCain is that he appears to be stuck in a vacuum. I sometimes feel for the stumbling, bumbling guy. He is clearly not qualified to be leading this country, I doubt if he ever was.

George W. Bush is also a technological luddite and doesn't use e-mail. In George's case he may following Rove's orders to avoid creating any incriminating evidence. Sarah Palin also reportedly avoids using the official Governor's e-mail system, preferring private e-mail accounts, probably so she can sidestep subpoenas to turn over damning "official" e-mail records. These days it seems that the quickest way to be prosecuted for your crimes is to maintain an e-mail account and use it to communicate with your fellow co-conspirators. This may explain McCain's refusal to use a calcaputer.
