Last time I checked, oil is a finite resource. Wouldn't we as humans feel pretty stupid if we sucked every drop of oil out of the earth only to find that it was the only substance that could cure cancer or aids or prevent "the big one" along the San Andreas or Puente Hills faultlines, or something equally significant? I'm not saying it is the cure or the prevention, but wouldn't we all feel like boobs if it were?
