35. I wonder if Paul Newman has ever endorsed a candidate and done ads?
I can't ever recall hearing or seeing him speak out specifically for a candidate (issues, yes, but not a particular individual).

Nice ad. I am cheering for Ned Lamont. I hope that Connecticut realizes that Joe has got to go.

48. They Said Last Night...
....that Dean is pulling money out of Ohio and Tennessee to go fight in Maryland, because Brown is assured to beat DeWine and Ford is collapsing. Those races are decided.

If Steele wins in Maryland, I don't know what to think.

Our politics seem to get nastier and nastier with every cycle.

50. Who's "they?" From where are you getting this information?
All I've seen is the comparison re: the number of ads they've run: http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/story.asp?S=5630304 and the fact that Ford voted early. No fool, he. http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/story.asp?S=5627520

I'd think NewsChannel Five in TN would cover this 'hot scoop,' but not a word of it on their website...just the usual 'final days' stuff: http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/story.asp?S=5629284

In fact, the only documentation I can find seems to refute your assertion completely about D money:

Party committees: The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has spent the most, about $4.8 million through Monday, according to Federal Election Commission records. The Republican National Committee has spent $2.3 million, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee another $1.9 million. http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061102/NEWS0206/611020378/1001/NEWS

I saw in other cites that Corker tossed a few million of his own dough into the pot:

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has spent double the amount projected in the Tennessee race, said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., committee chairman.

"We think Tennessee is neck and neck," Schumer said.

Ford said Corker's infusion of another $1.35 million of personal money — putting his personal total this election at $2 million — to underwrite more commercials is another sign he is behind.

http://www.hendersonvillestarnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061103/NEWS0206/611030412

A source would be helpful.

...I've seen says Corker is surging. I'm not talking about what Schumer says.

CNN, Fox, MSNBC and the legacy networks are all saying the same thing. So are Zogby and Rasmussen.

It's the south. It's primitive and it's backward. Most southerners like it that way.

55. Primitive? Backward? And they LIKE it that way? How insulting.
I think there are plenty of southerners who might beg to differ.

The spread is about eight to ten points, according to NYT. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/05/us/politics/05diary.html?ei=5094&en=12c9fde252e4845b&hp=&ex=1162702800&partner=homepage&pagewanted=all But who knows? That polling happened before the Military Times editorial and the Pastor Ted scandal. And early voting is going on like mad. It's too soon to call it either way. I wouldn't call it a done deal yet.

56. Look...
...I lived in the south for almost ten years.

It IS primitive and backward and they DO like it that way.

I have an idea you've never lived there. I doubt you've ever been there.

We were in Texas, where the provincialism is especially bad. There's a law that says Texas schoolchildren must salute the flag every morning! It's also legal to fly the Texas flag at the same height as Old Glory!

The workplaces are absolute political cesspools. I got so tired of it that we moved to California.

You have no idea what goes on there. No clue.

58. Look. You're WRONG. I have lived in "the South."
And I find your generalizations a bit.....curious. "The South" is not a monolithic entity. Or perhaps South Carolina, Florida and Georgia aren't quite "south enough" for you?

I've also lived in your paridise-by-comparison California (both northern AND southern California), and I've got to say, it wasn't exactly a hotbed of enlightenment when I was there, especially with regard to to the treatment of Mexican workers.

As for your knowledge of flag etiquette, you need a refresher. It's perfectly legal to fly any state or national flag at the SAME HEIGHT as Old Glory. The prohibitions come into play when you wnat to fly a flag or pennant ABOVE Old Glory. http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html

And in addition:

Are there penalties for violating the Flag Code?
No. The Flag Code is intended as a guide to be followed on a purely voluntary basis to insure proper respect for the flag.

I think you see what you want to see. There are idiots in all fifty states. If anyone lacks a clue, it's you. But you sure as hell do a great job with that broad brush of yours!

59. Well...
Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 01:46 PM by datavg
...if that's true, there are a whole lot of us who seem to be wrong.

My wife and I are originally from Ohio, so we're typically midwestern hard charger types. I got tired of walking down hallways to get something done and having these empty headed idiots telling me that I walked too fast or talked too fast or did other things too fast.

We just got sick of it.

Politically speaking (especially when it comes to presidential elections), the south HAS in fact been kind of monolithic lately. The last non-Sunbelt president we had was Jack Kennedy. That was a long time ago, and the likelihood that Hillary Clinton or Russ Feingold or anyone else of that geographic persuasion winning the White House is simply not good. I pray to God that John Kerry isn't the nominee again in 2008, because if he is we'll have an Electoral disaster the likes of which haven't been seen in twenty years.

We needed Warner but he doesn't want it. Clark would be okay but he's a lousy campaigner. Edwards is a great guy but also isn't a good campaigner. He couldn't deliver a single southern state for Kerry...not even Florida!

Did you know that in 2010, the population of North Carolina will exceed the population of New Jersey? When that happens (and we have reapportionment), it will suddenly become more important to carry North Carolina than New Jersey for any Democrat hoping to become President of the United States.

Also in the next census, Texas and Florida will each gain three Electoral votes. They'll come primarily from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and other states in the Rust Belt.

How the hell does John Kerry win in that kind of environment? He doesn't.

I think the party has to realign to the center if it has any hopes of continued viability. Pat Caddell, Donna Brazile and Jim Carville all feel the same way.

Either that, or the party's gonna split. What remains is viable as a centrist alternative to the Republicans and those who split join the Greens, which is where they belong. Most of Santa Monica City Council is already Green.

Dean has a great idea in running fifty state campaigns, where the whole idea is to spread Republican resources as thinly as possible to make more races competitive...but he still doesn't seem to understand how different the southern political culture is and the importance of addressing those issues.

60. I think you are stereotyping. Who ever thought VA would be this blue?
I don't think that it wasn't that Warner "didn't want it" it was that oppo research by his own crew made him change his mind...that's what I heard, anyway. He had a girl problem. Clark had ZERO political experience. I knew him when he was on active duty--smart guy, a bit quick tempered. He wasn't used to playing the political games. It IS tough to switch from giving orders and having people jump to having to convince people. He did very well, all things considered. He will improve with age. I personally wish he'd run for the Senate.

Populations shift. It happens. Why do you assume that people who move south will suddenly 'grow stupid?'

And John Kerry's problems (and he is my Senator and I do like him) have more to do with his patrician speech patterns than anything else. Down the road in ten years or so a plain-talking Deval Patrick might be a bat out of hell from Massachusetts on the national stage.

Many voters are stupid, from Maine to California. And many aren't. I think it's absurd for you to suggest that a region of the country is stupid or slow--it's THAT kind of sneering and superior attitude that turns people against the Democratic Party. I sure as hell hope you don't identify yourself as one of us when you make those snarky ass remarks about the south. It's not helpful.

We are a big tent party--that's why someone on the right side of the tent, like Harold Ford, can coexist with the centrists and the lefties. What we need to remember is that 'all politics is local' like Tip taught us, and we'll do fine overall, even if purists find that irritating.

We win based on ideas, connecting with constituencies, and being honest, not by writing off entire sections of the country and calling their inhabitants stupid because some of us are rigid and unable to adapt to the cultural peculiarities of a region. That's what the GOP does.

Term limits also mean you loose good guys, like Byrd (50-60 years?) or Bernie Sanders, or a Kennedy or Durbin, etc. for example. There are many more.

Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 12:05 AM by ThsMchneKilsFascists
Paul Newman:
18 years ago when Joe Lieberman was running against Lowell Weicker, Joe's battle cry was '18 years is enough'.
I suppose Joe said that because after 18 years, the good ol' boys club trumped good government.
It's tough times out there and CT needs someone who is young, fresh and spunky.
Voters should take your advice Joe, 18 years is enough. Vote for Ned Lamont.
