There was a time when Obama's "mutt like me" comment would have left audiences open-mouthed with astonishment. Utter clarity, honesty, and humor -- the best way to confront history. The past is so over.

11. We grew up calling our selfs mutts |
|
because we lived in a neighborhood where most of the residents were European immigrants. When I went to NYC the people kept asking me what I was, meaning what nationality. I kept saying that I was just an American, and they kept pushing for a different answer. Finally I would give in and say "To my knowledge I am Irish, Scottish, English, German, Swedish, Dutch, and American Indian." They would look at me and say, "Oh, you're American." Yes, I am an American mutt.
I thought I was a mutt, but my kids are even more so. You take my heritage and add: Spanish, (Puerto Rican) Tatino Indian, African, and Dominican whatever. The "whatever" represents any of the nationalities that may have been mixed in the countries whitening process. Anyone wanting to learn about a country that is a real melting pot, study either Dominican Republic or another country with a like history. The USA is not a melting pot yet, rather it is a stew or a salad according to sociologist. Its cultures are put together but retain a flavor of their own.

An African-American friend who helped campaign for Obama in Virginia told me that when he was growing up before the civil rights movement, "scientific" words like "quadroon" had been invented to describe people with various degrees of African ancestry. These terms were used to separate black and white Americans, and also fragment the African-American community. Recently he asked his teenaged son if he knew what any of those words meant, and his son was baffled. He didn't see the point of categorizing people like that, and couldn't believe anyone had wanted to do such a thing. My friend excused himself, went into the backyard, and wept tears of joy and relief. I forwarded him this video clip, because I knew he would get a kick out of seeing a soon-to-be President casually crumpling up the elaborate classifications once endorsed by American policymakers, and cheerfully referring to them (and himself) as a "mutt". Thank heavens for "whatever" and "all of the above"!

7. I am a mutt but my adopted dogs are pure bred |
|
And both are low allergen. I found my guys through Pure Breed Rescue. Almost all kinds of dogs have rescue and foster for their breeds. When you have allergies or children with allergies you can't take the chance of bringing home a dog they might not be able to keep. That would be tragic for the kids and the dog.

18. The other day I was discussing Obama's approach to the presidency, and his |
|
choice of Rahm as his "enforcer", so to speak. I'd contended that Obama preferred not to be confrontational verbally, but would just go his own sweet way, anyway - whatever anybody else, Republican or Democrat, thought. And Rahm is going to "get it done". So the other poster said, yes, what he called "the good policeman - bad policeman" thing.
Well, I had thought of it in terms of Mutt and Jeff, but didn't like the implication regarding Obama, so dismissed it. And yesterday it occurred that, wittingly or unwittingly, he'd stepped into the breach, himself, without any qualms. It's different like that, so I'm happy with the Mutt and Jeff thang now.
