Some of my husband's ancestors came from Great Barrington, and I have an old history of the town kicking around somewhere.

In the middle 1700's, the place had a reputation for having more taverns than churches -- and a prominent Connecticut preacher of the Jonathan Edwards ("Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God") persuasion moved up there to beat religion into them.

Doesn't seem like it particularly took.
