COMEDY CENTRAL The Daily Show w/ JON STEWART - March 10, 2009: Hilarious response tonight from Jon Stewart to Jim Cramer's tour of talk shows Tuesday. Jon points out the hypocrisy, takes on Joe Scarborough, and visits Dora The Explorer and MTV's The Hills.

1. There is no logic to picking a fight with a comedian
Jon Stewart makes fun of people for a living. And usually much smarter people than Jim Cramer who have way less ammo to deal with. Not a good move.

31. Particularly a totally unnecessary fight -
Cramer COULD have said - 'Yep, I got that one WAY wrong', and that would have been the end of it. Instead he says "I never said that!", as if he doesn't know what videotape is.

How can anybody so STUPID get a TV show telling people how to invest?

35. he must have one huge ego
and underneath it plenty of insecurities, because he let it get to him way too much. He should have had a little bit of a sense of humor about himself, instead he tried to belittle Stewart and he looked like a fool. Well more of one.

51. Sadly, I don't think the value of the advice is even very relevant.
I think what asses like Cramer and Santelli are valued for are their populist hair-pulling, teeth-gnashing cathartic rants, whether or not they contain any good counsel. It's a sort of primal scream therapy; making sense isn't the point.

Beale: Edward George Ruddy died today! Edward George Ruddy was the Chairman of the Board of the Union Broadcasting Systems and he died at eleven o'clock this morning of a heart condition! And woe is us! We're in a lot of trouble!!

So, a rich little man with white hair died. What does that got to do with the price of rice, right? And why is that woe to us?

Because you people and 62 million other Americans are listening to me right now.

Because less than 3 percent of you people read books.

Because less than 15 percent of you read newspapers.

Because the only truth you know is what you get over this tube.

Right now, there is a whole, an entire generation that never knew anything that didn't come out of this tube.

This tube is the gospel, the ultimate revelation.

This tube can make or break presidents, popes, prime ministers.

This tube is the most awesome goddamn force in the whole godless world.

And woe is us if it ever falls into the hands of the wrong people.

And that's why woe is us that Edward George Ruddy died.

Because this company is now in the hands of CCA -- the Communication Corporation of America. There's a new Chairman of the Board, a man called Frank Hackett, sitting in Mr. Ruddy's office on the 20th floor. And when the 12th largest company in the world controls the most awesome goddamn propaganda force in the whole godless world, who knows what shit will be peddled for truth on this network.

So, you listen to me. Listen to me!

Television is not the truth. Television's a goddamn amusement park. Television is a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of acrobats, storytellers, dancers, singers, jugglers, sideshow freaks, lion tamers, and football players.

We're in the boredom-killing business.

So if you want the Truth, go to God.

Go to your gurus.

Go to yourselves!

Because that's the only place you're ever gonna find any real truth.

But, man, you're never gonna get any truth from us. We'll tell you anything you wanna hear. We lie like hell. We'll tell you that Kojak always gets the killer and that nobody ever gets cancer at Archie Bunker's house. And no matter how much trouble the hero is in, don't worry. Just look at your watch. At the end of the hour, he's gonna win. We'll tell you any shit you want to hear.

We deal in illusions, man. None of it is true!

But you people sit there, day after day, night after night -- all ages, colors, creeds.

We're all you know!

You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here!

You're beginning to think that the tube is reality and that your own lives are unreal.

You do whatever the tube tells you --

You dress like the tube.

You eat like the tube.

You raise your children like the tube.

You even think like the tube.

This is mass madness, you maniacs!

In God's name, you people are the real thing.

We are the illusion!

So turn off your television sets. Turn them off now! Turn them off right now! Turn them off and leave them off. Turn them off right in the middle of this sentence I'm speaking to you now.

Turn them off!!

EDIT: For those who don't recognize it, that was Howard Beale, in Paddy Chayefsky's incomparable "Network"

32. Absolutely
I love the Jon Stewart show and watch it regularly. This may be the funniest bit of all time, bar none. He definitely OWNED them. As other people have mentioned, don't mess with a comedian, but if I can add... don't mess with a comedian as brilliant as Jon Stewart who has been owning people just like them for years. He is several leagues above the whole crowd. If Cramer is smart, he will just shut up, say nothing and pretend this never happened.

82. That is a really good question.
The media is comforting him, if anything else. I think that if the media would cover things like this, then maybe we would be calling them "the news" like we did back in the day. It is not likely to happen, you can't have reports like this without actual reporters who do research and ask actual follow up questions based on their research.

Called Tucker a "dick".

Killed the show.

The Right may have O'Reilly "lookin' out for" them, but we have John Stewart! And all he has to do is play clips and call it as it comes.

But comedians, and this one in particular, just have no problem letting it rip when their bullshit detector goes off. Its pure gold to them.

And that more or less automatically puts him on a certain side of the politiccal spectrum for the last decade+.

9. The Repug Media Meagphone looks like it may have some Competition
And behind that sanctimonious, condescending NBC damage control team, they are scared shitless, because they haven't seen this for a very long time.

This truly eviscerates the guts out of the Right Wing media, because it pulls away the curtain of fraudsters that they have spent years grooming to be successful and trusted.

I trust John Stewart, because like any intelligent person and a great comedian, he has to look at all sides of these media sound bites with the attention to detail of a lawyer examining a contract, plucks out the misplaced commas, the craftily ambiguous sentences, and outright lies, and lays it out on the line for the clients who them slap their heads when they see how badly they would have been screwed.

Stewart is impeccable, and I'm sure that the repugs are starting up the pressure machine as we speak.

19. The insecurity just oozes off Cramer (and Scar)...
...(among other things that ooze off them, of course).

If JS was fundamentally wrong and was just "cherry picking" a bad call or two, anyone who had actual confidence in themselves would have just brushed him off like a flea.

That's not how Cramer reacts: he makes the rounds (which JS also mocked) making the case to defend himself (complete with his own cherry-picked clips of right calls (and those really qualify as "cherry picked")). Why? Why bother?

Because Stewart nailed him! Pegged him as the loudmouthed goofball with a "morning zoo" soundboard that he is. I note that in his cherry picked clips where he was right (not this clip, but one in a CNN reoport on this "controversy" -- where he told people to take what they really need for five years and pull that out of the market) was from some other show where he's talking to the host in a rational manner, not his own shoutfest.

I wonder if I can score a grant to set up a research project to assess these guys (all pundits, really) for accuracy?

66. Oh, and Cramer's really pouting like a baby
Actually, most babies are more mature. Meanwhile, Joe is throwing a tantrum.

It really upsets them when they are called to account by a comedian whose logic is superior to their talking points.

Cramer smears Stewart as a mere "comedian," as if that somehow rendered him beneath his dignity. Cramer himself, meanwhile, does a road show for the college circuit, making him the financial guru equivalent of Carrot Top.

78. As I watched this, I was thinking, "Stewart is completely comfortable with himself."
I was also wishing I was that confident. :)

While watching Cramer, I realized he was going to lose because he has no confidence. The sad fact is he should realize why he has no confidence: BECAUSE HE WAS REALLY REALLY WRONG ABOUT A LOT OF IMPORTANT THINGS. He cannot admit this to himself or his audience. He cannot admit having a failing.

I think confidence must come, eventually, from admitting to our own mistakes, owning them, learning from them and moving on. I'm in the process of learning this, but I don't always do it very well.

In societies where freedom of speech was not recognized as a right, the court jester - precisely because anything he said was by definition "a jest" and "the uttering of a fool" - could speak frankly on controversial issues<2> in a way in which anyone else would have been severely punished for, and monarchs understood the usefulness of having such a person at their side

the comback to the 'variety' show and the indignation of Joe and the hurt of Mika (is that her name - I don't watch anymore). He was right to include shots of those two.

Jack Welsh's boys and girls are all geared up to deal with the idiot who dealt lies. Their shuffling and positioning is hilarious in itself.

Cramer reminds me of Tweety. Both coached to act, but their coaches left them to look like fools some of the time for Tweety and most of the time for Cramer.

I think it's Ludlows turn now.

Starts up media megaphone in 2003 and cheerleads Bush as he invades Iraq.

Continues this gravy train until he is done, or his masters say he is done.

Personally, I find it difficult to imagine what kind of coercion or threats could make a person become such a lying, repugnant sack of crap like Scarborough, but it fits right in to the Repug way of shaping opinion.

64. I love it! Financial news needs to clean house everywhere. Used to be you could always
count on financial news to tell the truth, because they were held accountable with dollars and cents if they lied. Not anymore. In the wacky world of Bush economics, the business news turned into Rovian propaganda, too.

87. Where is the alledged clip of Cramer saying sell everything and what is the date on it? Panic & sell
Edited on Wed Mar-11-09 08:47 PM by pam4water
isn't really any better investment advice than hold Bear Sterns. Cramer is Mr. Market from:

"...
Ben Graham, my friend and teacher, long ago described the mental attitude toward market fluctuations that I believe to be most conducive to investment success. He said that you should imagine market quotations as coming from a remarkably accommodating fellow named Mr. Market who is your partner in a
private business. Without fail, Mr. Market appears daily and names a price at which he will either buy your interest or sell you his.

Even though the business that the two of you own may have economic characteristics that are stable, Mr. Market's quotations will be anything but. For, sad to say, the poor fellow has incurable emotional problems. At times he feels euphoric and can see only the favorable factors affecting the business. When in that mood, he names a very high buy-sell price because he fears that you will snap up his interest and rob him of imminent gains. At other times he is depressed and can see nothing but trouble ahead for both the business and the world. On these occasions he will name a very low price, since he is terrified that you will unload your interest on him.

Mr. Market has another endearing characteristic: He doesn't mind being ignored. If his quotation is uninteresting to you today, he will be back with a new one tomorrow. Transactions are strictly at your option. Under these conditions, the more manic-depressive his behavior, the better for you. "

Ok I'm not sure Cramer can handle the being ignored part.
