Showcase of Japanese technologies that hopefully our country will be getting into when we start to emphasize technology and sciences under the Obama administration - even the Republicans could get behind this as they could start to build an army of Republican voters who they could program NOT to switch sides to Democratic - their last hope of saving their crumbling party.

Just posting to show how much America needs to start doing in order to get back into the technology leadership position again - no need to put on main page

Although, a robot woman would certainly never have a headache. I just woouldn't like my chances if there was a short circuit.

10. It is easier to boss a female robot around and not as scary
A male robot would give people ideas that they can boss men around..cant have that..:P

... that the designers are ... gay?

I understand that homosexuality is even more of a stigma in Japan than here.

16. It's both
It's a pretty impressive display of bideal control, and beneath the surface their is a lot of impressive hardware technology.

17. well put - and could lead to injured soldiers being able to walk and function again
if someone wants to call that 'a toy', it makes me wonder how big their vision for the possibilities is

Nice, throwing the patriotic angle in there. Cheers to you for that whether intentional or not.

Rats with severed spinal cords were restored using stem cells. The human therapy will not be far away.

Science fiction has played with the idea of humaniform robots for decades. Do not misunderstand me. The coordinated software and hardware on that thing may be of high value. My argument is against humaniform robots.

I think South East Asia will take the lead in robotics and biotechnology since their countries have export driven economies.

I've heard the reason Japan puts so much time into robotics is because their birth rate is so low that by the 2020s they will have a nation of geriatics and not enough young people to take care of them. So they are investing in robots now so they are functional when they need them 20 years from now. Too bad the world can't show that kind of long range thinking on climate change, but there you go.

18. Of course it is a display of technology, just not leadership
Physorg regularly has great examples of technological leadership, but humaniform robots are a wrong direction. They will either be toys or eventually perform services and companionship.

Under that surface may be some great technology, but I would argue that there is a lot more on display here than the the underlying technology.

21. you have a point
Eventually, robots with humanoid form will have their place -- simply because the world around us is built for humans -- but making the robot cosmetically look human is not too technically interesting; makes for good PR though.
