It's just that we're less clued-in on their internal politics, so we might not notice it.
The CBC, the Canadian station that aired that report as well as that stupid lady with her broad brush, is putting up some DOOZIES lately that are reflective of the Harper government. They even have an obnoxious TV series (family drama) called EASTONS MEET WEST or something like that. It's the tale of a family of "asshole liberals" who move to Western Canada and are fishes out of water. They behave like complete fuckers, they're rude to their neighbors, they're didactic about "ecological issues" because, you see, they are city slickers and they just don't UNDERSTAND. Oh, and daddy is an "environmental officer" for an OIL company.
The neighbors bring them a meal for their first day in their new home. Instead of saying "thank you" they turn up their noses because it has MEAT in it and then they give their new neighbors a bigass lecture.
Liberal Mom does yoga naked in front of an open window in full view of the neighbor's children, the druggie-looking daughter, who doesn't fit in with the wholesome country scene, steals a car and runs away, and is rescued by the son of the neighbors, who was going to drop out of school but changes his mind because he thinks the liberal chick is hot (and of course, he's a GOOD boy), and the liberal father lectures/finger wags the self-reliant, no nonsense, eminently likeable next door neighbors about everything from using a paintball gun to scare a coyote away from the livestock (that's BAAAAD), to using pressure treated wood in an area where anything else would rot in a year (also BAAAAD).
Are you getting the picture? CBC is a government run channel. The message in this series is that liberals are obnoxious, stupid little pricks to be tolerated and pitied, because, well, they're stupid. The shit they put up there is reflective of the CONSERVATIVE government currently in power. They want everyone watching to understand that liberals are well meaning, stupid, clueless buffoons who cannot do the hard work of farming, ranching, surviving and providing sustenance for others.
Now see, when the liberals were in power, they had a show on called WIND AT MY BACK that was a heartwarming family drama about the Depression, that emphasized people helping each other, a need for more government programs to help those hurt worst by the economy, the struggles of a young widow and her children, the interfering mother-in-law who was a wealthy mine owner who was sometimes slow to provide equitable wages and safety in the mine, who hated the daughter in law because she was (gasp!) Catholic....that tackled topics like discrimination, labor issues, social issues, you name it. It was written with a deft touch, too, so it was a popular program--and it was cancelled quite abruptly when the government changed.
It can all fly over one's head if one isn't paying attention. The same sort of thing happened here on TV with GWB, even without "government run" channels. All of those stupid "enforcement" shows like 24 and NCIS--I mean, please. How hideous. Talk about MUST MISS TV. That stuff just sucked.
