This is one of the saddest tragedies in America today! I know of girl who was born with both male and female sexual organs along with other problems related to sexuality. However, in a rush to hide this from their friends and their church the parents along with the urging from the doctors surgically "fixed" her to look like a boy. Well, of course they got it wrong and she has been imprisoned in a male body her entire life! She does not have the money to reverse the mistake and is now an outcast in society and can't marry who she loves! DISGUSTING! Not to mention the mental and physical suffering that she has had to endure her whole life!
Many of these Bronze Age believers deny that this actually happens because their Bronze Age SkyDaddy is after all perfect and makes no mistakes!
So, FUCK YOU Focus on the Family!

In cases where there's a question of gender at birth, is there a bias (by families and/or health care personnel) in favor of one gender or another?
Is there a better track record of success when they go with female or when they go with male?

3. I have no idea on the bias issue... |
|
I do know there has been pressure put on the parents by doctors to have corrective surgery early either way...I would hope the decision on which sex would come down to the individual case as I sure there is a wide range of issues unique to each case. After the decision is made on which sex and the surgery is complete then the parents are instructed to raise the child like nothing was wrong. However, the child will eventually know they are different especially if the doctors & parents guessed wrong. I have heard there is a push for doctors to not do surgery until the child has matured and knows who they are...I think this is due to the irreversible damage that can be done from the surgery which would prevent or make even harder to be reversed.
Having said all this I am not in anyway educated on this subject. As I said I had a childhood friend who went through this and what I know has come from short conversations I have had her. I have read about it just a little. I do know this girl I knew had extremely religious parents and she felt they were ashamed of her. Especially when "she" was suppose to be a "he". I do not think she even speaks to her parents now. I have not spoke to her in years as she moved out of Georgia for obvious reasons.
However, what I do know is this is an extremely heart breaking problem and the way we Americans treat these human beings is disgusting!
It would be nice to hear from anyone here on DU that has deeper knowledge on this subject!

5. I think they are waiting now. |
|
I think they wait now until the child is older. It must be difficult to have to explain to your child why they are different that way, but better than getting it wrong! I saw the documentary on a case like this where a boy had been injured during circumcision so they castrated him and raised him as a girl. It had devastating effects on everyone in the family, as secrets usually do.

4. I recall reading of a "Primitive" tribe who handled this situation by letting the child select their |
|
gender prior to undergoing their initiation rights to enter adulthood. They would be initiated into the gender role of their choice and would be treated as such by the tribe thereafter. Perhaps a benefit of not having a surgical option.
