2. K & R and I love you, Dr. Dean!
Would've made a great POTUS and his stint as DNC chair is a big reason a R. isn't in that position this time.

3. I don't understand why HBO just doesn't let the show run 10 minutes longer
They could at least do that for the live show and then cut the overtime for the reruns.

Thanks for posting, because I always forget to watch overtime online.

5. When is the "overtime" part on anyway?
I set to record the hour show, but did not know about the overtime?

6. Thanks for posting that.
I did not realize there was an overtime part. Haven't been watching this year.

That was a fun part of it. The rest of the show was good as well

7. Does Bill Maher work
at being deliberately dense?

Dr. Dean's point was right on - that it doesn't matter what the motivations are if you both want to achieve the same ends. Christians want to end poverty, and so do non-Christians. How simple is that?

And Maher has to step on it with his tired old mini-rant about "the guy coming down from the sky," completely off-topic and in appropriate. It was the cry of a spoiled child - "LOOK AT ME! I'M SO CLEVER!"

What a tool.

Dr. Dean is, as always, smooth and knowledgeable and - let's be honest here - perfectly adorable......................

12. Christians want to end poverty,..
...and make them all Christians

Christians worry about global warming so they can make you all Christians
Christians worry about Darfur so the can make them all Christians

The motivations are close but not the same.

The goal of the Christian Church is to save everyone's soul...and how do you do that? They used to do it by burning and drowning.

Christians may want to go down the same road as others, but not necessarily for the exact same reason.

Dean's view is dangerous and naive. SOMEONE had to be clever! Someone had to NOT BE A TOOL for the "Jesus is just alright with me" crowd.

Heh -- if the Christians don't convert you while you're living, the Mormons will sneak up on you after you die with a *baptism by proxy*.

17. By your reasoning -
and I do not agree with it at all, having worked for the New Catholic Left as an attorney in the 1970s, side-by-side with nuns and priests who were interested only in making sure that right prevailed - nothing would ever be accomplished unless the people willing to work on the problems passed your specific kind of qualifying test.

That's ridiculous - if we're talking about trying to save Darfur, I do not care about your religious beliefs. I care if you can raise money, haul supplies, get more people involved, and feed hungry people. Beyond that, unless you're wanted by the police and are using my project as a hiding place, everyone is welcome, regardless of their religious affiliations.

You characterized Dr. Dean's view as "dangerous and naive," at the same time displaying your views as narrow, biased, and the very opposite of bipartisanship and liberalism.

9. Howard always nails it
Sending Franken's Senate seat "is ridiculous and everybody knows it."

What about Florida in 2000?

"That was ridiculous and everybody knew it."

It took him less than one second to respond with that one.

I wish my computer's hard drive worked as quickly as his mind.

13. Can someone summarize for us deafies? I could make out that Mahr
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 01:21 PM by tblue37
said, "What happened in FLA in 2000," and then Dean said something and everyone laughed. What did Dean say?

Then, around 8:12, another huge burst of laughter suggests that Cohen and Dean had an interesting exchange about something, but I couldn't undedenrstand what was going on. I listened to the whole video, but I caught maybe two sentences out of it. So frustrating.

I love Huffington Post's practice when they offer videos. The person who offers the video always sumamrizes what happens, and often even provides a partial transcript of key points. I wish people on DU would do that when posting videos. It is so frustrating for those of us who are severely hearing impaired to be unable to access the information in the videos.

14. Dean was talking about the Franken case having to go to the SCOTUS.
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 01:47 PM by intheflow
He said that would be ridiculous and everyone knew it. Then Maher said that was what happened in 2000. And Dean replied, "That was ridiculous and everyone knew it!"

In the later bit, they were talking about evangelicals, and how repukes are losing the under 35 evangelical crowd. Dean said that that demographic's priorities are poverty, climate change, and Darfur. Maher expressed sincere doubt that liberals/progressives could work with evangelicals on anything, b/c they don't care what the world is like since Jesus will be coming to take them home any second now. Dean says you can't find common ground on abortion, for instance, but stuff like climate change is common ground. And that's more or less when Randy Cohen jumped in and said (per the OP), "Even if you think Jesus is coming, we want to the leave the place very neat for when he gets here." :)

It must be very frustrating to try and follow something like this as a deaf person. Closed captioning really should be mandatory for every vid broadcast.

15. Yes--I use closed captioning with TV, but vids online don't have it.
I want desperately to keep up with everything, but it's hard now that so much is presented online in vids that are not closed captioned.

Thanks for helping me out inttheflow!

18. K&R. I was looking forward to seeing Howard Dean on this show,
Not guessing he'd be on the panel... He was just great! Said that going to the US Supreme Court with the Minnesota senatorial race is "ridiculous, and everybody knows it." Bill Maher said, "Well, that's what happened in Florida in 2000." Dr. Dean replied, "Well, that was ridiculous, and everybody knew it." :woohoo: :patriot:
