exasperated by her ridiculous pro-torture meme.

real garden party.

Fucking idiot.

I think the entire Cheney family are a group of disgusting sadists.

8. Did you notice the hypothetical?
If you know... and you know... and you know that waterboarding will get you the information..

There is no way of knowing any of the things upon which she is basing her hypothetical. It is an absolute lie that she or anyone knows that waterboarding will get you the information you know the poor tortured person has.
Further it is clear that it was not a last resort technique, as she claims. 183 times in one month on one person? That's not last resort, that's sport.

10. exactly
they always use these abstract arguments which deflect the issue. When no wmd's were found they said "do you want Saddam back"? What the heck does that mean? Apparently he wasn't a threat so yeah I want our 4294 soldiers back. Sure you might get a confession about almost anything but is it actionable or just a goose chase. How do you know the person you're "enhancing" is innocent or guilty of a future attack? She makes no sense.

9. Thanks for posting this.
I love Robinson, and I never, never, never watch "Morning Joe." Even if I could stand Joe and Mika, which I can't, it's on from 3-6 am on the West Coast.

Liz Cheney is wrong, wrong, wrong on this issue, and probably many others. Torture is *never* justified.

Old Faithful of Nonsense
By Eugene Robinson

WASHINGTON -- Can't we send Dick Cheney back to Wyoming? Shouldn't we chip in and buy him a home where the buffalo roam and there's always room for one more crazy old coot down at the general store?

For the final act of his too-long public career, Cheney seems to have decided to become an Old Faithful of self-serving nonsense. His latest in a series of eruptions came Sunday on "Face the Nation," when he continued to press his revisionist case for torture -- and, for good measure, counseled his beloved Republican Party to marginalize itself even further from public opinion and common sense.

"It's good to go back on the show," Cheney told host Bob Schieffer at the beginning of the interview. "It's nice to know that you're still loved and are invited out in public sometimes."

I don't know about the love, but I do know why Cheney gets asked to appear on talk shows so regularly. Unrestrained by protocol or objective reality, he's pretty much guaranteed to say outrageous things. He requires no prompting or coaxing. As far as he's concerned, issues have just one side -- his -- and anyone who disagrees must secretly wish to deliver our nation to al-Qaeda.

snip//

Schieffer asked him about Rush Limbaugh's assertion that the Republican Party would be better off if Colin Powell left and became a Democrat. One would think that Cheney would have at least a measure of respect for a longtime colleague with whom he had served in two administrations. But one would be wrong.

"Well, if I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd go with Rush Limbaugh, I think," Cheney said. "I think my take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn't know he was still a Republican."

Let's see: Given a choice between a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and secretary of state who has given to his nation a lifetime of exemplary public service or an entertainer who brags about how much money he makes from bombast and bluster, Cheney would go with the gasbag. This is advice that's supposed to help the Republican Party?

I really think Cheney would be happier if he were home on the range. I'm sure the deer and the antelope would enjoy listening to what he has to say.

16. HER HYPOTHETICAL
Edited on Tue May-12-09 01:17 PM by 90-percent
Her hypothetical has about as much reality as that classic Dan Ackroid bit on SNL 25 tears ago:

"What if Napoleon had B-29 bombers during the battle of Waterloo?"

Theres at least three verifiable flaws she mentions:

torture works - uh, no it doesn't

water boarding is not torture - uh, yes it is

water boarding is not illegal - uh, yes it is

Once again, a national debate is being mucked up by BULLSHIT.

Larry King should have her and Jesse Ventura on together for a nice chatty little debate about the torture issue.

If you have an argument with the phrase "if this, then this" repeated a few times, doesn't that make the probably of that logic string about 1 in 85 billion or something?

I'm sure the Sheik in question confessed to killing JFK, Lincoln, faking the moon landing, to knowing the Colonel's secret herbs and spices, to really being named Nancy...I don't feel safer because of this.

21. "If you knew he had information"...
...yeah, sure. So, like someone else on DU pointed out, I guess they must have thought to themselves, "83rd time's the charm". Because that's how many times they waterboarded one of these people. How long was that time bomb ticking -- how many days or weeks went by while they repeatedly tortured?

In any case: it is already documented that over 20 people died under interrogation, thus exceeding even the very high hurdle for torture as laid out in the infamous legal torture memos.

Start prosecuting their asses already!

Eugene didn't give her any breathing room. I was so glad Scar wasn't there I kept imaging him screaming at the tv because he couldn't get in to throw out some more of his bullshit.Scarbourough called in as Liz Cheney first began to throw in his two cents. Scar would have tried to change the subject because liz Cheney was getting her ass kicked.

Mika needs to shut her damn mouth with all of the sighs. Mika seems to think that President Obama needs to invite Cheney to the whitehouse, for what? Hasn't he fucked up enough? Shut the hell up Mika! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IN THE HELL YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!

27. I'd like to know what RW PR firm got her on the show.
Why aren't Cheney's minions out there defending him, their policies and what they did? Where's Gonzo? Ari? Yoo? Condi?

If they really believe in what they did, they should be out there arguing their case, asking for an investigation and challenging someone to bring charges - in the public square. Instead they use Cheney's daughter because they're chicken - and he let them.

What gives her credibility or authority on the subject? She's obviously been coached and drilled well but so what. I hope my daughter would also defend her father but that gives her no real standing for doing so.

The hypothetical was beyond ridiculous. I believe Eugene Robinson was trying to disagree without ripping her apart unceremoniously. It got harder as she wouldn't allow him to be gracious. She looked shrill and angry. Eugene appeared generous.

28. pained face in video shot
Look at the face of Cheney in that video shot. She looks like someone that is about to be waterboarded.

I will bet anyone that she, and her ilk are the ones that cry over films like Lassie and others like it yet take torture abuse conducted like that in 24 as a thigh slapping moment.

What did they think about the Deer Hunter and the scene when the guys were in the water with the rats? Just games, the Cong were entitled to do this because Hanoi was to be attacked. How about Schindlers list? How about the real agent whose name escapes me now whose finger nails were pulled out. He appears on Countdown quite a bit. George Clooney played him in Syrianna.

These apologists for torture are dragging this country into an abyss that we may not be able to recover from.

I watched a movie a while back named, V for Vendetta. It scares me to think that that is where we seem to be heading.

Finally, O'Reilly is a total and absolute jackass. I would love for him to once do a little research. I err, a lot of research. When he is not dehumanizing G1's in WWII he is sermonizing Churchill and the Brits when it suits him. So far as I know he has France, Germany and Canada on his hit list. He should listen to RTE and hear what the irish think of him. Plastic Paddy he is known as. As an Irishman I don't have that much time for Churchill but he at least was conscientious enough to contemplate the ramifications of some of the proposed actions.

Let O'Reilly, Hannity, D Cheney, his daughter his wife and all those that believe this is not torture be subjected to 25 seconds of it and let us know what they think afterward. Let the last one be Coulter and let her be subjected to at least 30 seconds by the widows of the 9-11 heroes.

If and if and if and if, would you waterboard? There's got to be some kind of knockdown for this argument the same way that "Godwin's Law" knocks down comparisons to Nazi Germany.
