Senator Edwards delivered a major policy speech this week at the Council on Foreign Relations where he rejected Bush's "war on terror" ideological frame.

7. Outstanding speech indeed!
Edwards' closing remarks were powerful:

Today we need great principles, moral courage, and, above all, a vision—of a tomorrow that is better than today, of a world where the power of example is mightier than the sword.

We need a strong military for a new century, and we need one based on hope, not fear. As Robert F. Kennedy once wrote, "Our answer is the world's hope." Our answer is the world's hope. We will need imagination and courage to imagine great possibilities, to create a world where terrorism belongs to the past. We must, at the same time, rely on our heritage: a time when we were admired by the world, where we shared, with generosity and good faith, our ideals of truth, justice, and equality.

Like a beacon, America can once again provide a clear light for the world—dissolving the fog of injustice, illuminating the path to a new century.

This is the America where I grew up—and it is the America that Elizabeth and I want again to share not only with our own children, but with the children of America, and of the world.

2. Edwards is on his own Two Feet
and not this BS that is going on in Congress. We need to stand strong for the American people, not for just House and Senate seats.

6. Breaking! Edwards' statement on passage of Iraq war funding bill
Just hitting the wires:

EDWARDS STATEMENT ON CONGRESSIONAL PASSAGE OF IRAQ WAR FUNDING BILL

Senator John Edwards released the following statement today following Congress' passage of an Iraq war funding bill.

"Washington failed America today when Congress surrendered to the president's demand for another blank check that prolongs the war in Iraq. It is time for this war to end.

"Congress should immediately use its funding power to cap troop levels in Iraq at 100,000, stop the ongoing surge, and force an immediate drawdown of 40-50,000 troops, followed by a complete withdrawal in about a year.

"The American people's call for a new course in Iraq was not answered today, but Congress still has the power to end this war. Our security and democracy alike demand it."

"Our security and democracy alike demand it!

9. Edwards or Obama
I hear Obama and I lean towards him, then I hear Edwards and I lean towards him. This is a tough choice.

10. This email just in from John Edwards

About an hour ago, the Senate caved to President Bush and sent him another blank check to continue the war in Iraq.

This is a serious blow for all of us, but no one lost more today than the troops in the field who continue to sacrifice so nobly and their families still waiting back home.

It's a hard moment, but you and I don't have the luxury of getting discouraged. We must remember: This is not over. For those of us committed to change, it has only begun.

This weekend, thousands of us will take action in our communities to support the troops and end the war. We will speak out in public. We will send care packages to soldiers in Iraq. We will gather letters for Congress and the president. And on Memorial Day, we will remember and honor those who sacrificed everything for their nation.

Join us:

http://johnedwards.com/r/15045/80460/

After tonight, one thing is now perfectly clear: No one else is going to end this war for us. Bush will not listen. Congress will not fight. There’s no one left to lead the country now but we the people.

Each of us has a duty and a responsibility to our troops and to each other to do all that we can to end this war. Under the Constitution of the United States of America, we the people are the sovereign and the ultimate deciders--and by all that I know is right we will succeed in bringing our troops home.

Thank you for standing up.

--John Edwards

15. I like John Edwards...
... he is a great human being - not sure I agree about ALL he says here though - The war against those who attacked us on 9/11 is valid; But what Bush has been doing is a crime against everyone!

16. Thanks For The Post!! I Think Slowly But Surely... The MARCH Is
on, and John Edwards despite ALL the upheaval, has shown he has grown and has become VERY comfortable in his own skin! As each day goes by, he shows me why I'm still supporting him!

I realize there is a long way to go, but I've been a supporter for much longer than many others here. And a supporter who was initially surprised by being drawn to him as I was. I have some valid reasons, but there are some things about him that are simply "intuitive" and not as easily explained.

I always felt I was more Liberal than he and even though I was born in the North one would think I would be more drawn to one of the more liberal types. If he stays on course with his own little "surge" of sorts, I can't turn away from him.

Go, Johnny, Go!

18. Start A War, Then Demand That Others End It
Edited on Fri May-25-07 08:03 PM by MannyGoldstein
"As a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, I firmly believe that the issue of Iraq is not about politics. It's about national security. We know that for at least 20 years, Saddam Hussein has obsessively sought weapons of mass destruction through every means available. We know that he has chemical and biological weapons today. He has used them in the past, and he is doing everything he can to build more. Each day he inches closer to his longtime goal of nuclear capability -- a capability that could be less than a year away.

The path of confronting Saddam is full of hazards. But the path of inaction is far more dangerous. This week, a week where we remember the sacrifice of thousands of innocent Americans made on 9-11, the choice could not be starker. Had we known that such attacks were imminent, we surely would have used every means at our disposal to prevent them and take out the plotters. We cannot wait for such a terrible event -- or, if weapons of mass destruction are used, one far worse -- to address the clear and present danger posed by Saddam Hussein's Iraq."
