1. I just flipped to it for a few secs
just in time to see an elderly priestly type unmistakably say "asshole!"

These guys need to beware lip readers.

Really.

17. The bald guy in the gown next to the President was secret service
Edited on Sun May-17-09 03:59 PM by FightingIrish
He never clapped and kept scanning the crowd. I watched thew whole thing on Notre Dame's live stream. He walked out right behind the President and I got a really good lock at the wire for his ear piece.

The guy with the hat on in this picture.

I especially enjoyed the Notre Dame Victory March playing as President Obama exited.

22. Thanks, but no
I mean a REALLY old dude, in the audience. They'd cut to him because, presumably, his reaction was relevant.

Thanks though.

9. Probably Fr. Ted Hesburgh
Please don't use the term "idiot" when you don't know who he is. He was Pres. of Notre Dame
during MLK's era, appeared with MLK many times, a true progressive, and 92 years old. Your
question is insulting...

10. Given the presentation, I think the term applies.
Every time they cut to him, Obama was saying something nice about SOMEONE. If it was about him, a little human response was in order.

15. what a small minded fuck YOU turned out to be!?!?
if you had half the character that Fr. Hesburgh has in one of his in-grown shriveled up pubic hairs- you would be TWICE the slug you are now!

24. Sorry, think I screwed up:
Me = 1/2 pubic hairs

Me = twice me.

So me = the slug that he is.

Did I get that right?

Wiki-

The Rev. Theodore Martin Hesburgh, CSC, STD (born May 25, 1917), a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, is President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame. He is the namesake for TIAA-CREF's Hesburgh Award.

Hesburgh grew up in Syracuse and had wished to become a priest since early childhood. He studied at Notre Dame until his seminary sent him to Italy. He studied in Rome until he was forced to leave due to the outbreak of World War II. He graduated from The Catholic University of America in 1945, having earned a Doctorate in Sacred Theology. He became executive vice-president in 1949 and served in that position for 3 years.

He served as Notre Dame's President for 35 years (1952-87), the longest tenure so far. He holds the Guinness Book of World Records title for “Most Honorary Degrees”, having been awarded 150. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964, the Congressional Gold Medal on December 9 1999<1> and the United States Military Academy's Sylvanus Thayer Award in 1980.

In 1967, he led an academic movement which issued the so-called Land O'Lakes statement which insisted upon "true autonomy and academic freedom in the face of authority of whatever kind, lay or clerical".

In 1982 he was awarded the F. Sadlier Dinger Award by educational publisher William H. Sadlier, Inc. in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the ministry of religious education in America. He was the first recipient of the NCAA Gerald R. Ford Award in 2004.

Hesburgh served as a member of the United States Civil Rights Commission from 1957, and Chairman from 1969, until his dismissal by President Nixon in 1972 due to his frequent opposition to Nixon policies. He also served in a number of other posts on government commissions, non-profit organization boards, and Vatican missions, beginning with his appointment to a science commission by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954.

President Jimmy Carter appointed him to a blue-ribbon immigration reform commission in 1979; the commission's finding — that any national immigration reform proposals can only succeed if the American national border is properly secured beforehand — has been cited by various opponents of illegal immigration to the United States, especially those that are Catholic or sympathetic to Catholic views.

He was one of the founders of People for the American Way. Hesburgh served on the Knight Commission that overhauled college sports from 1990 to 1996. Hesburgh was a major figure in US politics and the Catholic Church from the 1950s to the 1990s, and he is still influential today. He is an endorser of the Genocide Intervention Network and is a strong supporter of interfaith dialogue.

In 2009, he supported the invitation for Barack Obama to speak at Notre Dame, which was controversial because of Obama's strong endorsement of pro-choice legislation. <2>

I am going to send a letter to the Notre Dane Dean suggesting he change the name from "Fightin' Irish" to "the Funny and strikingly intelligent and even quite provocative slugs".

Edited on Sun May-17-09 06:10 PM by TheEuclideanOne
That guy is really lucky to have somebody like you defending him. :sarcasm: You know that they say you can judge a man by the company he keeps, so if I am Judging Fr. Hesburgh by you, I can only conclude that he is a loser. No offense, of course.

21. Pretty sure I heard the word "speech" several times,....
but yes, God knows, the brain also has an interesting way of misinterpreting speech according to what one expects or wants to here, and ambient noise plays havoc with my hearing as well. We'll see.

glad some at notre dame are so self righteous as to ignore the fact theyve had others speak that have played parts in the deaths of people...

pro-life my ass.

more like, anti anybody who doesnt think exactly like i do.

this whole 'controversy' is a made up hooplah.

if these people give so much of a damn, why arent they protesting every day against someone new?

they dont. they just wanna get their 2 seconds of fame, and since someone was coming to them... well why the hell not...
but as far as actually going out into the world and standing up for this same belief? yeah right.

16. As a Catholic I am disgusted by these people
These people who act like our religion is the basis for their disapproval are liars. They are political partisans who cherry pick an issue to criticize democrats.

What about the Iraq war? Pope John Paul II called the Iraq war "a defeat for humanity which could not be morally or legally justified." Where were these people then? Why weren't they standing up and shouting at members of the Bush administration? I know why - it's because they are republicans who use their religion when it is convenient to further their political agenda.

Don't be fooled. The majority of Catholics in this country support Barack Obama. And of those Catholics who do not support him, the majority are honest enough to say they do not support him for political reason.

that they otherwise spew as sacred in every other aspect except the abortion issue (as they made that their showcase of consternation for this event)? What kinds of morons are these colleges pumping out into my/our future society? Just goes to show what the past 8+ years destroyed.
