MSNBC The Rachel Maddow Show - 4 June 2009: The 3rd Rail - Obama's game-changing speech in Egypt.

RICHARD ENGEL of NBC NEWS DESCRIBING REACTION: "A lot of people in Kabul and across the Islamic world simply had their mouths open when they were listening to this speech. They couldn't believe what they were hearing. They had not heard this kind of language from an American president."

RACHEL MADDOW: "President Obama today spoke frankly and directly about the United States, about our closest allies, about our friends in the region and about our enemies. He said things that American politicians never say in public, especially American presidents, especially while they're overseas, especially while they're in the Middle East, especially all in one speech. It was like he grabbed onto the third rail and decided he was not going to let go."

1. Condemns Israeli Settlements
2. Denounces Arab Attacks
3. Labels Iraq "War of Choice"
4. Admits U.S. Role in Iran Coup
5. Dismisses 9/11 Conspiracies
6. Attacks Holocaust Deniers
7. Criticizes Arab "Democracies"
8. Admits U.S. Tortured

1. K & R. I listened to some fundie Catholic talk radio today on the topic of the speech
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 10:05 PM by ihavenobias
I'm a non-theist, but sometimes I like to raise my blood pressure by listening to . At any rate, the guest was some nut from a right wing group I can't remember the name of...?

Basically the host and guest went back and forth bashing the speech, saying that the president was apologizing and being soft, inviting Muslim law and not pushing Democracy *at all* and so on. The guest contrasted Obama's speech with one given by the Pope at some point, adding that Obama has no "foundation in natural law" and some other things I can't remember. In other words, they HATED Obama's speech and loved the speech from the Pope.

Incredibly frustrating to listen to.

23. If the link could be more hidden
I could see this becoming the new Rickroll. Or maybe it is, and I am just not up on that yet. Not knowing too much about Twitter yet, I did think I was going to read her responses.

12. For number 7, I feel that it didn't just point a finger at "Arab democracies"...
It perhaps could be said to point a finger to Israel with its claiming itself as a Democracy, but not giving equivalent rights to other non-Jewish citizens of its state (yes, there are Arab Muslim and Christian Israelis!)...

Turkey, which arguably isn't an Arab state, still has a problem with give rights to many of its minorities, Armenians, Kurds, and even Islamic citizens like women that want to wear headscarves in public. Turkey could be said to be pointed to with this part of the speech.

Or it could even be pointing back a finger at ourselves, when we have someone like Bush in power claiming to fight for "Democracy", and yet putting in things like the Patriot Act, taking away habeus corpus, etc. to deny certain groups of our own citizens their equal rights too.

And even now, though I think Obama is doing far better than his recent predecessors, there's a temptation for some to not feel like we should have the rules of transparency and accountability, feel its less momentarily "pragmatic" to be working for the health and economic well being of those that are economically disadvantaged compared to other groups of "corporate persons", that still needs work before we can claim to be a beacon of "democracy" ourselves!

It is significant and strategically wise that Obama didn't try to specifically scope that point to just "Arab" states, and left the target of that criticism open and generic so that we all could be reflective over its meaning, and places like Egypt, where he gave the speech wouldn't feel the brunt of its effect. I only hope that we moving forward take those words ourselves in account when we seek to reform and change this government to work for the people again, and restore its *democratic* roots...

Great speech Mr. Obama! Let's all work towards great actions too now to measure up to its call for them..

to the likes of George Bush...good luck with that. You sound like the fundie that said to me today "Well if Iraq is a war of choice, then why is Obama choosing to continue it"?
