Hanover man posts Brockton ‘Jesus’ beating on YouTube

BROCKTON —

The Hanover man who calls himself “the fast food comedian” and spent Tuesday afternoon getting whipped in downtown Brockton while dressed as Jesus is broadcasting his biblical-style beating on the Web.

John J.F. Mercuato, 37, an electrician and “street theater” stuntman, posted a video this afternoon to YouTube of him dressed in black shorts, black boots, white tube socks and a crown of thorns getting whipped with belts in what he called “The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ in Brockton, Massachusetts.”

In the six-and-a-half minute video, Mercauto is seen entering Westgate Mall in his getup, carrying a lightweight wooden cross while two friends whip his back and call him “a punk.”

“Can I ask a question? Is this a reenactment of Christ or is this a white supremacist thing?” she asks the group, who mostly ignores her. “Do you guys get off on this?”

1. What I found odd

was the size of the cross. Here in Arkansas, from time to time we have men walking around carrying a really big cross--we're talking like 8-10 feet long. Of course, they have wheels on the end to make it easier to carry--interesting, these modern twists to the crucifixion story.
