The EPA recently declared a public health emergency at the asbestos superfund site located in Libby, Montana, marking the first time in United States history that such declaration has been made. The declaration comes after decades of asbestos pollution to the town, mineworkers, and residents as a result of mining activities engaged in by W.R. Grace, the chemical giant that owned and operated the Libby mine for almost thirty years. The declaration also comes after the recent acquittal of three W.R. Grace executives for their role in the contamination of Libby. The EPA declaration provides a small piece of good news for a town that has already seen thousands diagnosed with a disease and hundreds die from the exposure to asbestos.
