According to the Washington Post, in a pre-holiday call with half a dozen top House and Senate Democrats, Obama asked health care advocates to ratchet back their pressure for a public option. He's apparently concerned about advertisements and on-line campaigns targeting foot-dragging Democrats.

We've been here before. Back in the fall and spring, when popular fury at private bankers was soaring, Washington urged liberal lobbying groups to focus more on backing the White House plan and less on attacking bankers and banks.

What happened? Washington allowed Wall Street insiders, many of whom had overseen the breaking apart of the economy, to manage the so called recovery, putting most of what was rotten back in place. The re-distributions of wealth to the top continued, while civilian unemployment headed through the roof.

As Barney Frank told bankers back in February, “People really hate you, and they're starting to hate us because we're hanging out with you.”

The health care debate is suffering from the same dynamic.

1. They are terrified conservative Dems like Bayh and both Nelsons
will be targeted, and rightly so.

My only hope in all this is that they stab the insurance industry in the back this time like the insurance industry stabbed the Clintons in the back in 1994. H. Clinton had bent over backwards, dropped single payer in exchange for mangled, er, managed care and insurance turned over to the industry who would then have to stop cherrypicking only the healthiest clients.

Once they had everything they wanted, they realized they still couldn't play fair, so they trotted out Harry and Louise (themselves uninsured actors, may they both rot in the hell they created for the rest of us).

My only hope is that the Democrats learned their lessons from those vultures in 1994 and are playing close to the vest on this one and will spring an incredibly robust public plan on them at the last minute.

They will need to do this. Whether or not they will is anybody's guess.

I would love to see the industry get stabbed in the back, a fatal blow. If ever a corporate "person" deserved assassination, it's the one that kills tens of thousands of us every year through neglect while bankrupting still more.

4. Keep drinkin' the Koolaid...the only one getting stabbed in the back...
...is you (and we) the citizens/voters.

If you honestly think the reason Obama is "terrified" because of blue dogs being targeted, you're painfully naive.

Follow the money...follow the 1.4 million a day plus being thrown at the Dems in Congress on this last round alone.

I hate to break it to you, but Obama needs any and every excuse to ignore or contradict the will of the 70% majority of we the citizens/voters so that he can go on TRI-ANG-U-LA-TIN!...you may want to reference the DLC and/or the Clinton administration on this one.

2. Whoa ! This is 1 of the changes we voted for,
As a former health care giver, I am shocked to see what is called quality health care now in Tennessee and Virginia. http://www.wisecountyissues.com/?p=62 Clearly profit care is more important than patient care.

3. Put insurance companies out of business.
And then we won't have to deal with them anymore.
