14. It's called a nervous tick.
Edited on Sun Jun-10-07 03:43 AM by Drunken Irishman
A lot of people have them, just listen to old John Kennedy speeches. Typically they're frowned upon and definitely don't help when it comes to sounding intelligent, but sadly it happens to a lot of people. My aunt has something very similar, except where "uh" is, she constantly says "you know". It's annoying, but very difficult to control.

2. I love clips like these because it shows how arrogant reporters get when challenged.
Edited on Sat Jun-09-07 09:41 PM by LoZoccolo
They rarely apologize or acknowledge doing anything wrong and just go into this shit fit when someone tries to call them on something, but it makes for great theater. I've seen them do this same thing to Michael Moore after Fahrenheit 9/11 came out as well, and there's this part in The Eyes of Tammy Faye where she calls some reporter for being unfair and the guy just turns into a diva.

Plus the interviewer was either not paying attention, stupid, or being manipulative because I see him clearly calling the media for having no reason "to make a circus out of this" and reiterates the accusation about the media's attention after she accuses him of making a weird conspiracy theory (and you can see her backtrack after the reiteration, which is also great theater).

9. That reporter was also TOTALLY out of line asking him was he "smoking anything"
today - she seemed to be intentionally cruel to him just because he BUSTED HER and the MSM by pointing out that the REAL news should be about the bullshit Iraq war, Gonzales and the attorney firings, and illegal wiretapping of American Citizens, and not about PARIS HILTON. What a bitch that reporter was to him! Way to go Tommy Chong - you rule! :hippie: (Who was that bitchy "reporter" btw?)

22. This is what news dialog has sunk to
This is classic Republican playbook. The O'Reily's and Limpballs of this world can't disagree with someone by backing up their opinion with facts - they attack the person's credibility instead of debate the assertion.

This woman could have took the high (no pun intended) road and told Tommy that she disagreed with him, but instead, when faced with something she know she can't dispute, brings out the attack dogs by asking him if he's smoked anything. EXTREMELY unprofessional to ask her guest that. But I guess that's what the media has sunk to.

That is an incredibly rude, condescending and unprofessional question to ask. He suggest there are more important things to be paying attention to than Paris Hilton and that republicans love the attention being diverted from those other things so he must be high.

As someone who studied journalism it is my semi-professional opinion that, in the strictest of industry language, she's a stupid cow.:P

15. What a bitch.
Totally out of line to suggest he was high. Chong brings up a very valid point that sadly has been completely ignored here. It just isn't the Paris Hilton ordeal, it's every sensationalist news story that's come out ever since Bush took office. The media attaches itself to these pointless stories and ignore the real issues facing our country today. They won't report about how poorly Iraq is going, or how fucked up Pres. Bush's administration really is. Instead they give small blurbs and then return to their 24 hour coverage of Anna Nicole Smith, Paris Hilton and the next celebrity to make national news.

Ok I'll admit, Tommy Chong didn't sound like the most intelligent person during the interview, but that shouldn't make his point any less valid. The media in this country is a joke and they're consumed with reporting bullshit stories instead of real news. It's pathetic that Americans eat this shit up, instead of demanding intellectual honesty from reporters.

26. Exactly, Tommy Chong ALWAYS sounds stoned whether he is or not
I am sure he still smokes up once in a while, but I don't think he is or ever has been the constantly stoned person people think of him as. Part of it is comedy, part of it is reality and part of it is just that he naturally has that stoner appearance.

For the "reporter" to ask him if he has been smoking something when he brings up a point that that a huge percentage of Americans would agree with though was beyond the pale. If this "reporter" does not believe that Paris Hilton is a media distraction when there are much more important issues going on then I think she has been smoking something a lot stronger than pot.

24. I love Tommy Chong, but he did not say it is a Republican conspiracy
He said it was a Republican distraction. That "reporter" was trying to spin his words to make it look like he was claiming there was a conspiracy and that the Republicans were the ones who had Hilton arrested. That is not what he was saying at all however, what he was saying was that the media was focusing way too heavily on this minor infraction from a celebrity when they should have been focusing on much more important stories. He was saying it was a distraction not a conspiracy, don't believe the media spin.

Tommy Chong said the truth and they do not like it when people tell the truth about them so they have to spin it with "have you smoked anything today?".

Playing politics with the Department of Justice has more faces than firing USAs. It involved prosecuting political enemies for cultural differences. Nixon taught these people all too well about political enemies and how to suppress them.

I have to give Tommy a lot of credit for being so mellow in the face of persecution and prison time. I'd have gone off big time about the "Republican conspiracy."

Chong's Bongs is back in the BIG news too, and hence, perhaps, there is something not-so-coincidental about the timing of Tommy on MSNBC. He was railroaded and persecuted by GOP political operatives. Meanwhile, I'm just guessing rich heiress P* isn't a Dem???

Did Buchanan use her DOJ position for political purposes? = Chong's Bongs
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1077370#1077500

From the 4/23/07 edition of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
---------------
Cracking down on drugs and pornography was big business in former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft’s Department of Justice. When federal prosecutors in California passed on cases involving glass bongs and hard-core sex movies, Pittsburgh-based U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan swooped in and stole the show.

Critics blasted “Operation Pipe Dreams,” calling the nationwide sting on drug paraphernalia trafficking a waste of resources. Buchanan charged on, though, and in 2003 won a conviction against Tommy Chong — the Los Angeles actor made famous by the marijuana-laced “Cheech and Chong” movies.

That same year, she charged Extreme Associates and the California owners of the porn production company in the first major federal obscenity prosecution in more than a decade. Critics again wailed about resources and the government fiddling with constitutional freedoms.

The Justice Department and Ashcroft praised both cases. Buchanan was rewarded with a string of lofty posts, one of which — director of the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys — has landed her at the forefront of a congressional investigation into a group firing of fellow Republican prosecutors. ...............
