Canada is ranked 8th and the USA is ranked 50th in the world, but that's only because the USA has more people don'tchaknow

Edited on Tue Jul-28-09 06:20 PM by JDPriestly
Does O'Reilly seriously believe that the numbers on life expectancy reflect the numbers of deaths? As opposed to the ages at which people die?

6. The problem is I'm guessing most of his viewers will passively absorb his idiocy.
They don't stop and think, and they'll start to repeat the nonsense to susceptible friends and family. It's like an STD for the mind.

25. I'm sure
O'Reilly knows, I think he also knows his audience doesn't, that might be the problem

26. If you want an example to follow....
Japan and Taiwan are probably the best choices.

I admire Canada and their Health Care, but it is best to look at those systems that are actually better.

28. Canada, from what I have gathered, is leaning more and more..
to a for profit system.

I do not believe the BS that our media has said about Canadian Health care, but after review I have seen better systems..

http://www.euro.who.int/document/e85516.pdf this is a good place to start. http://www.who.int/countries/en/

30. True, to an extent
Services have always been private to a degree, but as far as insurance goes, there are private plans available for extras such as dental and vision which aren't under the Canadian plan. They will never replace the government plan though, for one, they could never compete, and secondly, the government system would have to pull the plug and stop altogether. This will never happen because there would be a revolt and the party that tries it would be decimated forever. But the overall "insurance" will never go private.

32. that is not true. The system is universal, the "for profit" pioneers are offering...
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 11:31 PM by time_has_come
..only very basic stuff, like MRIs. And even then, they only make a profit from panic-driven people. If a condition is life-threatening or requires immediate care all services are served up immediately.

Yes, I've lived in Canada and been through the health care system. It was absolutely fantastic and they helped me with a serious condition promptly and with perfect success.

EDIT: I should say that the orthopedic area has seen a bit of private activity, in provinces that allow it. Some folks, understandably, don't want to wait several weeks for a knee operation. Things have improved and gotten faster in the public orthopedic system though. A public system will constantly improve to save time and cost with the motivation being the welfare of patients rather than profit.

2nd EDIT: Unfortunately Obama is not offering a fully public system, so the U.S. will never match the highest quality of care for the most people (and thus, the life expectancy) of Canada :)

it's our accidents and crime. But we do pay the price of having a lower life expectancy. What an idiot.

13. Wow.
I've heard some stupid things said before, but yeah.

The "health care that works in other countries can't work in the USA because the USA is way too big for it" is a common right-wing meme, but I'm usually charitable and assume they mean administration costs go up with that many people and not, "Canada spends 10% of its GDP on health care each year; The US has 10 times as many people; Therefore it would take 100% of GDP each year to copy Canada's system".

If you're charged 5% tax on one item and 5% tax on another item, together you've been charged 10% tax.

16. And here's More on the "IDIOT FACTOR" including then Govenor GW Bush!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhTZ_tgMUdo

Rick Mercer from the CBC in Canada did a show called "Talking to Americans" a while ago. While some people can be forgiven for not knowing about a country that sits right next door, the point is, some people will believe anything from somebody who "looks" official. The Bush segment was when he was governor of Texas, about to enter the Presidency, he was asked about Jean "Poutine" the then Prime minister of canada, EXCEPT his name is Jean Chretien. Dubya didn't even know the name of the leader of the country right next door! And "Poutine" is a French Canadian concoction made of french fries, melted cheese, and gravy! Enjoy!

Didn't Senator Al Franken have a passage in "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" in which O'Reilly doesn't seem to understand the concept of per capita?

This was quite hilarious though.
