The first thing I thought of was you after watching this (because of the tone/language): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS9uLOqRkRU (See 5 minutes in)

I wonder if Cenk has been watching your show? ;) Keep in mind this was the softened up version for YouTube. When I listened to the podcast even *I* was taken aback over the full version.

13. If you had a lifetime of being disrespected, as many professional women do, you
might understand a bit better.

It's in some ways like Professor Gates' situation in Boston. Maybe you would not have gotten as upset as he did, but maybe you would have, had you had the experiences and the knowledge he has. Someone who has not been in his shoes, or H. Clinton's, should be very careful about judging.

17. I understand fine, which is why I posted the video!
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 12:52 PM by ihavenobias
:)

Maybe TYT chose the wrong title for it and maybe I should've changed it. Outside of that I think Cenk nailed it, as did Hillary.

EDIT: I hope everyone realizes that when I referred to "tone and language" it was about Cenk's tone and language. I thought that was obvious but maybe not.

3. Was it a mistranslated question
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 12:12 PM by Turborama
or are they making that up to cover their asses over the questioners' diplomatic faux pas? That's a genuine question as I don't know.

Anyway, I agree with Cenk, her answer was valid seeing as the translation that came through to her asked about her husband.

K&R

24. No. The question was not mistranslated.
I had heard that the question was mistranslated, but seeing the video a second time, it is very clear that it was not. Not only does the translator clarify that the question is what does Mr. Clinton think through the mouth of Mrs. Clinton, but Hillary looks out into the audience to the person who asked the question and checks with the statement, "You want me to channel my husband?"

This question was clearly intended to insult and harass Hillary Clinton. Had she been 40 years younger she would not have understood the question or would have laughed at it. But, I understand fully why this was not a joke to her. I'm even older than she is. The struggle for women's rights is and was no joke -- and if you saw me you would not think "women's libber." Hillary Clinton responded appropriately.

4. It doesn't matter what she said.
The people that are criticizing are going to criticize ANYTHING she says. Had she said it in a sweet way, they'd say she was going soft and apologizing for America.

7. bullshit question, i would have been offended too
as a woman i perceive the question to mean "what does your husband think because he is the one controlling you"

I'm not saying you did, I'm just raising the issue that some might get the wrong idea based on the video title from Youtube.

10. Cenk is right. Even the airheads on CNN pointed out that the context mattered too
There was discussion of rape as acts of war and the rights of women. Damn right that anyone concerned about how women are treated on multiple levels in many societies should point out in a very strong tone that women should be respected.

Would we criticize a black SoS who reacted strongly when asked what a white person thought about the issues at hand, instead of being asked what he thought? I hope not.

11. However, there is a supreme irony here -
As Secretary of State, Ms. Clinton holds the TOP DIPLOMATIC post in the nation.

Diplomacy is about being civil at all times. If she was holding any other top job, losing her cool might be cool. But as the top diplomatic liasion between our nation and the rest of the world - she seems to be missing a key component of that job's mission statement.

25. History shows that losing your cool can be important in diplomacy.
Had the British lost their cools with the Germans a little earlier than they did, WWII might have been much shorter.

I got a couple of "I agrees" from women DU'ers and a pleasant "set to" from two men DU'ers. Here's the link...if anyone is interested.

22. One main reason it's good for people to be diplomatic...
is in case a simple mistake was made. As appears to be the case here.

Naturally it's even more important for America's Top Diplomat to be... um... diplomatic.

are rolling on the floor, awhoopin' an' ahollerin.' It was a much needed "spontaneous moment." The sexism in various African cultures can work one's last nerve. Real quick.

23. A little reason here
People mad at Clinton need to get over it. If she had reason to believe someone said something that dumb, she had a right to be mad.

ONE THE OTHER HAND:

Since it has been proven this was a translator's gaffe rather than a student being a jerk, people need to lay off on the student. It only makes people look vindictive of people demonize someone who was asking about Obama, arguably the most famous person of African descent in the world currently.

After all, Obama did hire her, even though there were many on the right AND the left who would not be satisfied with anything less than her getting burnt at the stake. Yes, I said left AND right, though the left might have bargained down to life imprisonment at the Hague.

28. Seems to me Hillary responded appropriately.
As translated, the question appeared to be based on the premise that "Obviously it doesn't matter what you think, so tell me what someone of consequence thinks."

29. "What does your husband think"

is totally inappropriate,
especially for a Secretary of State to the US!

She didn't blow up,
she didn't take any crap from anyone.

That's Hillary's stand since day one.

K&R.

Hillary had every right to be upset with the person's questioning of her husband's and a basketball player's opinion instead of hers. It was as if her opinion had no relevance. Good for her for sticking up for herself - and for women in general.
