http://hatingnotdebating.blogspot.com/2009/08/full-story-from-mccaskills-town-hall.html">The full story from McCaskill's town hall poster altercation

This video provides the full breadth of what happened at Senator Claire McCaskill's town hall event in Hillsboro, Missouri.

I must make one thing clear, it is not the intention of this video in any way shape or form to blame, imply, or insinuate that the actions of the police officers were biased or racially motivated. They were just doing their job. With that said, this video is intended to highlight the glaring discrepancies between what was covered by the media, how the crowd treated the 4 black women, and what actually happened.

There were 3 members of the audience who, for the entirety of the event, held up "Don't tread on me" flags. The audience took no exception with the 3 flag holders, they were not booed, jeered, attacked, and were allowed to hold the flags without incident.

The media has picked up on this story and my video but have focused on the fact that it was a Rosa Parks poster. I take partial blame for that, I shouldn't have insinuated that it was taken from her because of what kind of poster it was. The sign could have read, "I love my pet dog" and the man still would have taken the poster from her. That in itself is the story, the fact that what was on the poster mattered less than the fact that he ripped it away from the woman. We must not fixate on what was on the poster, we must focus on the man thinking it is appropriate it steal it from the woman.

The racist undertones were apparent at this event and have been across the country.

MSNBC just reported that 35% of undecided voters are NOW more sympathetic towards the protesters. This is because the media has not asked the questions of these protesters and the injustices that they are perpetuating through hate, fear, and scare tactics.

70. I suspect
that the 35 percent were sympathetic with them from the first place, and voted republican.

The good news is, 65 percent of them were unsympathetic.

But good video, and it really does paint a different picture than the one we saw on the media. But telling me the media is biased, is something I already know, but keep on doing it, as others need to understand, it is the media itself that sold itself as liberal. And it is liberal when it comes to things that don't matter to them, guns, gays, religion, or abortions. In fact, these issues makes their case for them.

And cloaked within all of this, we have an extraordinarily right-wing economic policy, of globalization without any fair trade agreement, union bashing, down-sizing, labor bashing, minimum wage bashing, and Wall Street sucking up.

This old rude man was arrested and charged with assault. I wish McCaskill would come to the defense of this woman. It is time for people to call these protesters out. The ignorance being displayed is overwhelming. I am shocked by the multitude of the of uninformed people attending the meetings.

75. Lawsuit. Against the deparments and the individual cops. For BIG $$$$.
That is the only way they will learn. Just like corporations, they will only change their ways when faced with being sued into insolvency or jail time. If a cop loses his/her house for being a racist, word will spread quickly among cops throughout the country.

And there is more than enough video of this event to accomplish that.

10. "Hey hey hey" begins when the black woman crosses the aisle and appears to be attacking
The camera sees the white guy take the poster, but the speaker and the police don't see that- they just see the black woman appear to attack the white guy.

The crowd cheers because it appears a disruptor is being removed, the speaker had designated the disruptor as the female when she said "Hey hey hey, ma'am..."

The "don't tread on me" people are on the other side of the room, and what they have to do with any of this is beyond me.

71. Gotta agree with ya, imdjh.
I don't think the woman was ejected because of her sign or skin color. No police made a move toward her until she went to retrieve her poster from the old coot in the blue shirt. Apparently, he was ejected too...and subsequently charged. To me, it just looks like it was a matter of clearing ANYONE causing a disturbance and sorting out who was guilty and who was innocent later. Seriously, if they tried to hash out all the details inside the town hall, it would have been a fiasco.

As far as those "Don't Tread on Me" folks, I bet if someone tried to take away their flags and they responded in the same manner as the black woman (which I think she had every right to do), all parties involved in that brouhaha would have been escorted out of the premises as well.

That comment about, "You can't only throw black people out because of signs" is definitely incriminating. BUT, I don't think any of the cops said that. I think it was bystander misunderstanding the events that transpired and trying to explain to someone else why the cops are questioning the "Don't Tread on Me" protesters.

Sorry, but it doesn't seem like racism to me on the part of the cops. Of some of the constituents, maybe. Of the media that only showed the black lady causing problems, yes. Now if the cops let the old white guy in the blue shirt go, then THAT would be clear cut. But here in this video? I can't fault the cops for what they did.

When trying to see it on this page, in the OP, I only get broken up sound. No video, just a news room still shot. I let it load while eating dinner and thought I could come back and let it play. No luck. I went to youtube, tried twice to see it there and both times "Safari Unexpectedly Quit"..... I got WildBlue Satellite connection so I could watch video and EPIC FAIL.... Does anyone have another recommendation for those of us living out in the brush to get good internet service?

I use Google Chrome & Firefox. Chrome is very unstable for YouTube vids (strange seeing as Google owns YouTube) so what I do is copy the YouTube link and paste it in Firefox, works every time. Hope it works. Failing that, I also download vids to my hard drive using this free software and watch them as a standalone file: http://www.sothinkmedia.com/web-video-downloader-firefox/

the double standard here is we've been condition to accept the far right pushing the line while the rest of us must toe it. Goes without saying it's that way for ethnic groups. What's even more humiliating is the police instinctly take the white guy towards the front and the black lady out the back..then jokingly says it looks bad? It looks like what it is and yes it looks very bad. Didn't see to many brown/black faces in that audience..hence the cheers. Makes me ashamed after living through the 60's this stuff is still
propagating. Claire should apologize to the woman not the audience.

28. This is the county where I live...
I hope people in this community see this and realize how terrible it is. There are not a lot of black people in this county (a few more than when I first moved here 20+ years ago). I think many here are slowly seeing that we are all just folks trying to make a living and getting by.
From the sound of the crowd, it looks like racism is going to be the demise of nationalized health care. That is sad in itself , but even worse because many people out here could use help with their health care and they are only hurting themselves by fighting against it because of fear. I admit I have fear also...I had the chance to go to this meeting, but I was afraid I would get angry if I saw something like this happen and I would be carted away. I take a class at a branch of this school and that would not look good!

I did email Sen. Maccaskill and I do hope that someone on her staff at least gets a chance to see this video. It says a lot. I would also like to see the Post-Dispatch do a story on this incident, not only because it is newsworthy, but because one of their reporters had a role in how the incident started.

this stuff happens all of the time, every single day in America. Cops will never take the word of a black person over a white person.

No matter where you are. You don't have to be in the deep south.

It's not just that African Americans are treated badly, it's that white people are treated better.

For asking a pointed question about the Iraq war, I believe. I've been thinking about that so much. He was speaking into a microphone at an event and the police tased him! 53. Hillsboro is full of racist...
Hell, all of Jefferson County is. OK, much of Missouri is. I love my state, but it is sure home to some backwards rednecks.

63. huh?
the woman who had the poster and the woman who ripped up the poster were both escorted out because they were yelling at eachother in the aisles. it was the white womans fault but the police caught the incident in the middle and both were escorted out.

73. Read my reply #71...
...as I explain what I saw and why i think the black women were tossed but the "Don't Tread on Me" folks were allowed to stay. I think we might, maybe, possibly be making a mountain out of a mole hill here. I think there is more to blame on the media for the way they portrayed the situation rather than any action on the part of the police officers.

68. You did an excellent job
this is the greatest fight we face as Democrats and as progressives, the American
media is not prepared to report facts, their reporting is based on fiction and drama.

Question we should be finding an answer for is this, How do we get corporation out of
the media?

Good Job Peter.....

78. I have absolutely no sympathy whatsoever for the teabaggers!
If it was a hundred years ago they would have been shooting at workers on strike.

Edited on Fri Aug-14-09 04:35 PM by Crowman1979
But if they are a minority, labor activist or just a peace protester, then arrest, mace and beat the living crap out of them?

The hypocrisy of america's law enforcement is ridiculous!

80. Appalling, but....
I wonder if this started as a "you get penalized for retaliating" thing; did the cops see the <favorite expletive here> take her sign or just her reaction to it?
