My husband and I didn't go to Woodstock, although we thought about it. We came up to Canada by bus from the NYC port authority which was filled with young people trying to go to Woodstock. Well, we had a mission, to come to Canada to avoid his going to Viet Nam.
It was truly amazing when we arrived to see how people were treated in the health care system. I had our son two months later after arriving.
We had opportunities to return but chose to stay and become citizens. All I can say is I am not bankrupt after having a son and husband diagnosed within two months of each other with cancers, Brain and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. They were given all the best treatment and with no medical bills to have to pay we were able to concentrate on living life the best we could in those trying times. They died 17 months apart. We had end of life counseling for each of them. It's a wonderful system up here . The Canadian people voted in a poll a few years back that the greatest Canadian to ever live was Tommy Douglas, who helped get up our one payer health care system. See

These people are right out of the book DEER HUNTING FOR JESUS. A very good and very funny book. I know of people like that and some are my relatives. I will never switch to an American health care system and none of my Canadian friends would ever. We can go to our doctors at the first sign of sickness and not worry about expense. I live up in rural North Ontario where there is a shortage of doctors but I have gone to the walk in clinic my doctor is part of and can see any doctor during the day without an appointment. The longest to wait if an hour. My son was getting a brain tumor operation 3 days after having his first ever seizures. My husband had his operation two weeks after the surgeon saw him, which was a week after our GP saw the lump from the ultra sound.
There are waits for non life threatening illnesses but EVERYONE gets their treatments. NONE are denied. I truly love my adopted country. It is filled with very caring people who believe we are all in this boat together.
