1. So who are the baddies this time?
Considering how much the world is wired together these days it would be hard for anyone to sneak up on us (It was dumb idea in the 80's, it's even dumber now).

3. The reference to "the sleeping giant" in the trailer, below
. . . suggests the bad guys are Chinese this time.

15. While it's better than most of it's kind
That is clearly a spoof trailer. What acting there was, was clearly poor quality. I give the creator credit, but there's no way that's from the studio.

Not to mention the ending where it says "Summer 2009".

The SFX really sucked.

5. My state is trying to obtain some revenue due to the fact so much has been taken away.
They are giving tax incentives to companies that want to produce movies here. There are three studios in the process of being built here. I don't think they are critiquing what is being made. If it isn't done here it will be done somewhere else. We need a break!

8. MGM is supporting everything that was in the SLPC report. Dog whistle indeed.

Hatred against blacks Jews and Hispanics. The trifecta... The "reds" code for Obama and the "libruls"

They need to be boycotted right NOW.

I liked the original RD and I am looking forward to this...I think there can be a disconnect between reality and entertainment. I know think is my first post but I have been lurking for a long time now and wanted to start participating in the debate. Love the site BTW!!!

12. duuuuuuuuuuude
I will resist being snarky and rude it being your second post and all, and give you the benefit of the doubt. So yes, its true, there is a disconnect between reality and entertainment. No one believes Willie Coyote can actually survive all those terrible drops he takes, or that he is even real. That is blatantly obvious to anyone. What is not so blatantly obvious is the CONNECT. During WW2, sticking to cartoons, they showed propaganda cartoons in theaters depicting evil slanty eyed Japs and idiot evil Nazi's. It was a way of CONNECTING images to biased thought processes.

Red Dawn and now Red Dawn the remake are made to play on the fears of Americans of some bad ass foreign boogymen, and also they have a message that the Government, including the armed forces, are useless (so you better buy a gun and join a militia).

It encourages xenophobia. I wouldn't be surprised if the invaders are Muslims (just like Obama!). I mean why would the Chinese invade, they already "own" America. It whips up the angry right, already frothing at the mouth having been on the losing end of elections recently. It also justifies the obscene military spending America is saddled with. They spend more on the military that all other countries combined! Half of your taxes. There is no need to spend that much. The closest competitor is China who spend about 30%. But propaganda movies like this ensure that military spending will never get back to 'normal' pre-cold war levels. And that means less money for education, health, reconstruction.

But go ahead and enjoy the movie. But understand that any other country that would actually attempt to attack the US would be wiped off the planet in a day. I'd rather see a movie where there is an actual believability factor, however slim.

13. Really???
Who said anything about reality?? This is pop-corn and bubble gun movies at their best. Almost all the movies out their contain some form of violence and I do believe Michael Moore made it clear that other countries also have violent movies and video games with very little evidence to show that they expand on the tendencies of their people to become violent...(I know they don't have the conservatards that we do). I think the news media is doing a much better/worse job of scaring people into their bunkers waiting for the end of days than any goofy movie could. I sometimes feel like we could all benefit from a step back and good old protagonist/antagonist movie from time to time. If those movies portray a bunch of kids defending their town from the commies, Chinese, Muslim, Christian, Israeli, alien destroyers, demons, etc...etc...etc... so be it!!! Man I think I need to go watch Top Gun or something ohhh maybe Navy Seals. ;)

14. Well...I said something about reality
Sure, you may be an objective viewer and simply love a good protagonist/antagonist movie involving lots of explosions. Fine. I do too once in a while. I would just rather see a movie where the protanonist and antagonist are more believable. Like Clooney's Syriana. OR if it is so unbelievable that I can just get lost in it, like an alien invasion. But when it is portraying events as if they might actually happen one day soon, when it is ridiculously clear that it could never happen, I am turned off. Especially when they racially profile their enemy. Everybody loves an underdog. So do Americans. So they make a film where somehow Murphy's law goes into overdrive, and they are in a position of weakness. Which sets the stage for the big explosive and heroic comeback. Yeaaaaaaaaa! But America is not the underdog, ever. You are the policeman and military bully of the world. Accept it.... you have paid plenty of your tax dollars to have that honor. So the movie and its predecessor are disingenuous to the point of insulting.

And like I said, you may simply regard it as an us vs. them good ole shootout, but for many it just reinforces, on a subliminal level, their persecution complex and facilitates the bloated Pentagon spending...when America should actually be spending less and less on the military budget.

18. The basic fact is we are influenced by everything we absorb so nowadays I agree totally with Tipper
Edited on Fri Aug-14-09 08:54 PM by GivePeaceAchance
Gore. It simply is just a negative intake that programs our thinking whether we're consciously aware or not. It doesn't influence those of strong will but there's always them that are. Hopefully I'd like to think I'm not easily influenced. I'll take it to an nth degree even I would not be too despondent if every horror movie and action film were to vanish miraculously, even though I may of enjoyed a few in my time.
