Note: Unfortunately Cenk was right when he set the over/under at 2 weeks for the resignation of Van Jones: .

Summary: This is a video from TYT's new YouTube Channel, . Jonathon Kim (formerly of BraveNewFilms, now of ReThink Reviews) joins Cenk to review the District 9. He loved the movie (as did I) not just for special effects and action, but more importantly for the great story and social commentary that touched on apartheid, the military industrial complex, racism/xenophobia and more.

I haven't seen the movie, but they made a point in the movie I disagree with.

They said that only the aliens could use their tech, based on some gene. That is not a new idea.

It is used in the later films of star wars talking about force being a genetic component. It is used by Stargate Atlantis also. The Davinci Code said the same thing by trying to make the spirit of and power of Christ into some passed on fleshly genetic trait. But more important then where it is in fictional stories, it creates a meme of blood lines determining power so some can make that claim.

Many monarchs said they had divine right by blood line.

Some groups think their groups heritage makes them more able to be or do things.

It has one effect, it rationalizes that some groups are better then other groups. And most authoritarian leaders need that claim to be able to defend a sense of entitlement that would not exist if they can not fabricate some excuse for being superior or better. It also allows the group to think they can judge another group they think is worse for things like lack of bloodlines.

The movie might make alot of good points, the review of the movie makes it sound interesting. But that point is one that I do not agree with.

For people that do think that idea is true, or that the spirit is passed by bloodlines, I like to post this picture.

And a song

13. Erm, biometric locks for weapons are already being researched
While it can probably be bypassed with a screwdriver and some persistence, something like a fingerprint lock would be useful for preventing enemies from picking up a gun in a firefight and turning it on the original user.

14. Then you'll be glad to know that what you're objecting to isn't one of the movie's points.
Without getting into spoilers, the genetic lock-out serves two purposes in this movie:

1) to explain why humans aren't using weapons based on the "prawns"'s advanced technology; and
2) to set up a situation where there's an opportunity to break that barrier, and what lengths weapons companies will go to seize and exploit that opportunity.

4. Agreed, it was excellent.
Apparently not to the pro-apartheid nut who just unrec'd the thread though (from 5 down to 4 recs). But yes, the more I think about the movie, the more I like it.

I might actually see it again before it leaves theaters.

5. The movie sounds great but that is not what I found interesting.
It was the conversation about apartheid in South Africa.
I knew that it was evil but I must admit I had no idea how stupidly evil it was....An honorary white? Can you think of anything more stupid than that?
