He says to give all that money (60 billion?) to insurance companies is insane. Unfortunately you have to watch Uncle Pat along with Dean. Buchanan as usual dominated.

I noticed that Howard Dean was conspicuous tonight by his absence from cable news after the speech. I saw a notice that he was to be on NPR after the speech, and saved the page. Now it says page not found.

It looks like the public option is still in the plans for the future, like 4 years from now when the exchange happens. Four years is a long time and anything can happen.

Speech transcript from Fox News

OBAMA: And all insurance companies that want access to this new marketplace will have to abide by the consumer protections I already mentioned.

This exchange will take effect in four years, which will give us time to do it right. In the meantime, for those Americans who can't get insurance today because they have preexisting medical conditions, we will immediately offer low-cost coverage that will protect you against financial ruin if you become seriously ill.

....OBAMA: And the insurance reforms that I've already mentioned would do just that, but an additional step we can take to keep insurance companies honest is by making a not-for-profit public option available in the insurance exchange."

1. In four years, a Republican will be president or the Democrat will be a lame duck.
So Congress can do what it pleases.

6. IN four years a Republican will be President or we will have already given Obama what he wants
And our wants needs and desires will no longer matter to anyone in the White House.

3. Ugh.. the worst part about that was I think Pat was right to an extent
in that us liberals/progressives are going to be played against by the corporate Dems as if our opposition to a bill without a Public Option will be what sinks our Democratic President in 2012. They're going to turn this on us. We'll be Ralph Nader to Al Gore... because our principles supposedly sank our chances at a Democratic President.

Honestly, I'm not sure I care. If Obama and the Blue Dogs believe in all of this pro-corporate nonsense, I'm not sure we need a repeat performance. Maybe our party needs a collapsing of this ridiculous big tent because it seems we let too many Republicans into the tent and they're fucking it up for the rest of us.

4. Hate to say it
but I have many of the same feelings.

I think our party equates any of us who want real Democratic change with the nutty right fringe.

I don't believe our side is hateful and petty like them, and I know we don't act as ugly.

They always talk down to the left, the progressives.

5. Is Pat recommending a Blitzkreig?
Hey kids, there doesn't have to be a Republican or a Lame Duck, we could run a real Democrat for president in 2012. Perhaps one who doesn't invoke our care for one another in order to con us into supporting the enrichment of the Insurance and Drug companies who have screwed us to date with billions more out of our pockets
