A legless unarmed man suspected of domestic abuse and charged with resisting arrest was Tasered by the City of Merced. After effectuating this arrest the report states the police left the man nude from the waist down for several minutes in front of a small crowd. No explanation was given of what the arrestee did that made the police fear for their own safety or the safety of fellow officers. The person arrested is a 40-year-old double leg amputee.

He said Williams was stunned once for less than five seconds, causing him to release his grip on his wheelchair so that officers could handcuff him. Andrade called it "unfortunate" that Williams' genitals were exposed to his neighbors and said officers didn't mean to humiliate him.

The Taser device can release up to 50,000 volts of electricity.

1. I ask again, what instructions and leeway is being authorized from the superiors of these police?

We should demand to know what they are being told that gives them a right to taser everyone instead of using pre-taser tactics of negotiation and law. Whose life was being threatened that this man had to be tasered?

2. Those cops are pussies

I'm not trying to denigrate women or law enforcement, but seriously. As the man asked, what kind of resistance did the police expect? The man is legless, he's got no feet, he can't run away, and he wasn't brandishing a weapon. Was tazing him necessary? No. Maybe later they can come back to his apartment complex and use the "sonic cannon" on him. Or the "heat laser." *sigh* WTF is wrong with our society?

3. Tasers are being used just like a new toy under the X-mas tree.

Every time this happens, I get pissed off because they seem to think it's a harmless toy to be used for entertainment purposes. The guy was in a freaking wheelchair. It's been pretty well established that these damn things can in fact be a lethal weapon. Say for example that my wife or I would get tased, we both have heart conditions. I have a feeling that amount of electricity wouldn't be good for either one of us.

The manufacturer seems to be the only one still saying that these things are harmless. Yeah well, the drug companies have done their own studies to show that none of their drugs can hurt anyone too. We all know how reliable an in-house study is.

4. Every day I hear of the misuse of tasers...when will their use finally be banned?

Think about all the cases you've heard about; Couldn't the old fashioned night stick be used instead?
Is it so out-of-date that it wouldn't produce enough force they want to dispense?
It's more that say, going hunting with an uzi or fishing with grenades ... these cops are just plain psycho.

There is no excuse for this. There is no possible way that they were in danger from an unarmed man in a wheelchair so that it was Necessary to taser him.
