McCain's Strategist Schmidt: If Palin is 2012 Nominee, GOP Could Have "Catastrophic Election Result" |
|
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 07:11 PM by Turborama
Yes, and that's why we want them to keep going on about Palin/Jindal 2012. They've even got bumper stickers for their "dream ticket":

1. Where can I send money for Palin-Jindal (or Palin-Anyone, for that matter)?. . . |
|
The way I figure it, every dollar spent on that catastrophic pairing will be worth $10 or more to the Democratic ticket.

3. No, that's exactly why we DON'T want her to run in 2012... |
|
Think about it.
We don't want to legitimize Palin's absurd, outrageous ideas about politics and policies any further. If she does run, that means that her abject, disgusting ideas get treated as a serious alternative to Obama's ideas. We shouldn't want to give a voice to that kind of vile and stupid ignorance. We shouldn't say to people: "it's okay to share those ideas" by making Palin a serious contender, because they're dangerous and damaging to the country.
Second reason why we shouldn't want this: if the right stays in the "mental hospital" (as Bill Maher so aptly described them), the Democrats can comfortably stay in their right-wing, formerly Republican, position on the political spectrum and not enact any progressive/liberal or even remotely left-wing ideals. If nobody forces them to the left, they will not move to the left and not represent and serve the people. Only a republican come-back to sanity will force them to do so.
That's why we need a strong, viable Republican party.

9. "Only a republican come-back to sanity will force them to do so." You must know that's pure fantasy? |
|
What needs to happen is for any moderate Republicans that still exist to split off from the GOP and create a new strong, viable party. But that doesn't look like happening, either.
It's looking more and more likely that Palin is going to attempt to run for 2012. If/when that happens the Republicans she tries to fight against will simply destroy her in the primaries, which will be fun to watch.

11. I see your point but I don't believe history bears this out. |
|
Historically it seems to me that Dems always try to cover the center at the expense of the left. And they don't do that as a reaction to anything the GOP is doing. If the GOP were to come toward the center, it would spell trouble for the Dems.

12. Alternative scenario: the Republican party fades and the Democratic party splits. |
|
Historical precedent: The Whigs, who split on the issue of slavery after winning two Presidential elections. That's where the Republican party got started.
I submit to you that if the absurd Palinistas drive the Republican party right into the weeds, the infighting in the Democratic party will inevitably lead to a fissure. One of those parties will seem like a saner version of the Republicans. Saner because the crazies have followed Palin into the twilight zone, yet conservative in that they support the future establishment, which would be Democratic in name. The other faction may form a more progressive New Democratic party that seeks to change the status quo. Could be Alan Grayson's future.

17. 1.The media have already legitimized the wingnuttiest |
|
of wingnut ideas--see Glenn Beck on the cover of Time, etc.--which are, in fact, mainstream thinking these days in the Republican party. That's the essential problem with your logic: it assumes the existence of a moderate Republican party that in fact went extinct a generation ago. The best thing the Republicans can do to further de-legitimize their ideas is to actually run on them in a national election, instead of running as faux moderates as Reagan, Bush I and Bush II did.
2.If there's no powerful political right-wing in the U.S., the political center will shift leftwards, as it always has historically in such cases--see Europe, post WWII.

With Palin getting the nomination I will mean that her far right fundamentalist fringe will be seen as being acceptable. She is still marginalized by most of the electorate but with her as the nominee it will mean that the crazies in the Republican party are here to stay.
