2. I saw it last night.
I was at 1st offended. Then I realized I had no arguments against it except for the fact that Obama has been President for less than a year.

When he said the voters on the left are the ones who should really be angry (or words to that affect), I realized I was angry at Obama. But what have I done about it?

What protest had I attended to show Obama where we stand? None, nadda, zip.

Soooo the answer is a constant months and months long protest to show Obama where we stand.

Despite promise to be "fierce advocate" for equality for all regardless of sexual status, he's done pretty much.... "nada".

Last time I checked we had huge majorities in both houses. "If not now , when?"

Ya gotta start somewhere.

because it is CONGRESS that is going to address the DADT issue during the next two months.
Obama wants CONGRESS to pass legislation on this issue which would make the repeal permanent.

edited to say... In looking for another quote, I came across this one... much to ponder:

"Criticism is necessary and useful; it is often indispensable; but it can never take the place of action, or be even a poor substitute for it. The function of the mere critic is of very subordinate usefulness. It is the doer of deeds who actually counts in the battle for life, and not the man who looks on and says how the fight ought to be fought, without himself sharing the stress and the danger." (1894

69. I agree 100%, Granny. However, it would be nice if Armison would at least get the voice
inflection right. His gestures and overall imitation of President Obama are not worth the time he gets to do this skit.

Had he gotten those parts right, I would have watched the skit, even if I thought the message was inaccurate.

Let's hope that Fred works on his act or the next three-plus years are going to be hit-the-remote time.

59. Absolutely! Plus, the same issues are brought up on Air America,
and the MSNBC "heros".

Reasonable people can disagree, but it's time to recognize that some are cheerleaders for Obama no matter what he does or doesn't do, and some are angry at what we see are mistakes and broken promises.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

Cry "conspiracy" all day, they'll get rid of him if he or any other president doesn't do exactly as they say, by legal or illegal means. They're an entity and a law unto themselves. They've stacked the House and Senate and bought all the major media channels. Think it's any accident that progressives have received not ONE INCH on ANYTHING in 29 years? Republicans by and large have ruled this nation for three decades, and not just any kind of Republican, but the stupid, selfish and ruthless kind.

Even the Democrats we elect to office support free trade and job offshoring, stating unbrlidled corpro-globalization will be great for the economy and the world in the long run. Well, lookit how far THAT little ruse has gotten us. Better jobs weren't created as a result. In fact, not many jobs were created at ALL as a result.

We're barking up the wrong tree here. The problem is far greater than any politician.

36. Obama has no choice but to play along.
Money is power. Message backed by money is power. The money behind the message is ubiquitous. During the Failure Fuhrer's reign, their media channels were looking for just about any damned excuse to prop the do-nothing king up, reality's cold smack to the jaw notwithstanding.

Have we seen ONE positive message about Obama and his policies since he's arrived? How many times have we seen Fox doing their usual Red-Baiting at the SLIGHTEST hint of any sort of policy, resolution or idea to left of Milton Friedman being suggested? Why is it SO arduously difficult to get a resolution put on an issue that would spread even a miniscule modicum of fairness (the "public option", which is about all you're going to get in the U$A) between the citizenry and their overlords?

It's because the Corptocracy DOES NOT WANT it that way. They want it THEIR way - "I get everything. You can TRY to get something, but I'm going to do my absolute godDAMNdest to either take it from you or make sure YOU DON'T GET it."

And their media conveys this message, but in the kindest and most fairy-tale way possible. Our country is filled with weak minded people who share the same brain that will follow and defend this message while not noticing the buckshot wounds on their feet.

Just ask the last president who tried to reign in corporate power where that got him.

Oh wait, you can't, because he's taking a dirt nap in Arlington with his brother, who likely would have done the same thing.

The President has only had eight months to fix a catastrophe eight years in the making. All of those issues presented as failures are in fact headed towards completion or resolution. We must not get our information or criticism of the President from a show that should have been canceled twenty years ago. Supporting our President means we must be patient.

The stimulus was needed to keep the American people in their homes and at their jobs. While it is not working out as well as planned, to say the President gave trillions to the banks is unsubstantiated conspiracy Right wing propaganda.

18. yes, Congress and the Administration have given TRILLIONS indeed to the Banksters
and a great big chunk of the "stimulus" went to tax cuts, and the rest was gutted as well to appease those same RW nuts (actually, our Corporate Masters) who squeal and writhe in agony any time a penny works its way down to some lowly serf.

By the way, it was progressives in the streets protesting the first stimulus (maybe the RW was too, I don't recall) and demanding a bail out for Main Street, not Wall Street. That Obama and the Dems have allowed the nutcases to claim the populist high-ground on the Banksters Bail-Out will, I am quite sure, go down in history (if anyone is around to write it) as one of the deadliest political mistakes ever. But then, what else are Politicos snugly in the pockets of the Corporcrats to do?

The taxpayers are currently on the hook for $13 Trillion (one year's GDP!) that our government has put at risk guaranteeing rotten assets. That's above and beyond TARP and the "stimulus".

14. True but Pathetic not Funny
Obama surrounded himself - isolated himself by the Wall Street Mafia....Now you add in the extreme right wing racist nuts and he is almost impotent...caught between a rock and a hard place policy wise.

By alienating his base, he has no one to back him up.

While one may excuse the inertia because he has had such limited time in office - after 2010 he won't have the unprecedented mandate that he had in 2008....so it may get worse.

I fear for the guy - but the skit is correct.

Baloney.
The Democrats have the white house, the congress and the senate.
They have all the power and are doing all this themselves.
It takes awhile for a new administration to get going and solidify their power base.
That's why the right is attacking so viciously right now.
If they can stop him now they might have a chance.
If they don't stop him now.....They are finished.

16. It Was Kind of True
I mean, the impression was horrible, but take the words of what he said, put them in the third person and coming from the mouth of a liberal and well, a lot of it is spot on.

Guantanamo is still open, no torture prosecutions, no progress on civil rights, Afghanistan is a disaster, the economy still sucks, millions waiting for health care

I think the problem is more expectations versus reality. Logically we all knew Obama was just a man. We knew that our Democratic Super Majority in the Senate included some DINOs. We all knew that our country had deep problems that couldn't be fixed in nine months. Somehow though, Obama had this image as something almost magical and I think a lot of his supporters helped cultivate this if Obama didn't himself. As for the Senate, that was the media that kept hyping 60 as some sort of magic number.

And the skit is sort of making fun of the foaming at the mouth right wingers who have no concept of reality

21. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid!
Guantanamo may be closing, but Bagram is open for business. Outsourcing at its worst.

The AG is "deciding" on torture? So that means that, as of yet, nothing has been done.

What has been done to re-regulate financial institutions? NOTHING.

What has been done to rein in derivatives? NOTHING. In fact, the amount of derivatives traded in 2009 is MORE than in 2008.

What has been done to break up too-big-to-fail financial institutions? NOTHING. In fact, those remaining are even BIGGER.

The reason the RW has been able to take control of the health care debate is that the Prez never put forward a set of clear principles. He took single-payer off the table immediately, and then has proceeded to refuse to commit to a public option.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

61. Very well said. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Americans's
have no clue what a derivative is, or the financial destruction they cause. Too many make too much from them, which is why nothing has been done. However, the Chinese government is stepping in to force regulation where western governments have failed. Ironic isn't it, that the western world may be saved by none other than the Chinese? Not out of goodwill of course, they're just worried they'll lose their ass, and rightfully so. That said, the irony of it can't be dismissed.

He has been indoctrinated and has traded whatever balls he may have had for the gold star of corporate suckerhood.

He has not lead, he has disappointed.

27. About the media hyping the 60 number...
..not true. I heard more than a few Senate Dems (most notably and specifically both Reid and Schumer although I'm sure they weren't the only ones) use not having 60 dems in the senate as an excuse over the past couple of years. And if memory serves me correctly, I'm pretty sure I received fund raising letters and donation solicitations listing that as a major goal. Now the excuse is that we need 60 progressive Dems (but of course please don't support primary opponents for any of our centrist friends).

And yeah, expectations versus reality is true but that is a pretty extensive, pretty accurate list in that skit and it's true NOTHING has really been accomplished or advanced in any significant way. We can hold out hope for Climate Change and Health Care reform but something tells me that would be naive.

31. The Obama impression has actually gotten worse, or at least it was near nonexistent here
but I thought: If roughly these same words came from the mouth of Stephen Colbert, would I laugh? ("Now I know there are a lot of us loyal, patriotic Americans worried about our President making this into a socialist nation, but personally, I think we should relax, because look at what he's done so far--nothing!...")

And the answer is: yes. Bitterly, I would laugh, but yes, I would.

And no, I don't put all the blame on Obama. But with all the instruments he has readily to hand, he could take a firmer hand in roping in the corporatocratic elements of this country. And I say that as a person who doesn't hate corporations; I think they're a vital part of modern life and they're not going away. The problem is that they have become disproportionately powerful and their governors obscenely rich at the expense of everyone else, and this needs to be corrected to get us back on an even keel. Not with socialism, of course, but with far gentler methods of restoring the balance.

24. Whistle past the graveyard at your own expense, DUers
Because like it or not, this is the growing perception of Obama.

You can bury your head in the sand and make snide comments about the quality of the impression; you can decry what is presented here as "RW smears", but it doesn't matter one iota.

This is the perception most Americans have of Obama, and those Americans are not going to care about the "only 8 months" argument, nor will they give much of a hoot about the nuance of "he's working on it". Obama needs to stop worrying about pissing off the right-wing and push hard to keep the promises he made, or he is going to end up a one-term president.

SNL is a mirror being held up to us...we ignore it at our peril. Remember how effectively SNL torpedoed Palin? That torpedo could just as easily broadside the Democratic party.

Americans like Obama, but they do not see results or a strong push, and both of those perceptions are VERY BAD, and need to be corrected before it is too late.

29. This makes sense because the momentum is building, right or wrong.
Public opinion generally is never perfect, but public opinion matters greatly... and if that opinion sours against Obama it will not bode well for him (and us). Like the SNL skit or not, there was a message there... much as many of us say the lists presented are not wholly factual, and I agree, many in our society will walk away believing the entire list to be right on target.

64. Just who the fuck do you think can resolve most if not all
of this country's problems in less than a year? These are complex issues that Obama is dealing with, but progress is being made. It was perfectly understandable that Bush was slammed by the left during his presidency, but at least his supporters rallied around him. Obama can't even get support from left. Keep bitching guys. You think this is bad?

82. Who are you arguing against?
Because it certainly doesn't appear to be me. Where did I say that Obama cannot tackle these issues? I didn't. Where did I mention the "left" at all?

Strawmen are a sign of intellectual dishonesty. Please engage with someone who likes wallowing in bullshit. As for me, I'd rather just deal with those that can actually keep a thought in their heads for 3 seconds without turning into the "spin machine".

83. Every person in this thread that focused only on the impression
...are whistling past the graveyard.

Every person on this thread who simply insulted SNL without addressing any issues that were raised is whistling past the graveyard.

Every DUer who came to this thread and said "yeah, but....", and then started discussing nuance that the American people don't give a shit about is whistling past the graveyard.

The graveyard says that Obama is seen as weak for not getting this stuff done. Excuses will not win the next election, and it will not improve the perception of Obama.

What DUers SHOULD have been discussing is how to make sure this idea (that Obama hasn't done shit) doesn't enter into the public's perception, but most DUers don't want to talk about the elephant in the room...they are too intellectually dishonest to do so. This does not bode well that our side cannot even discuss perception without the typical strawmen ad hominem bullshit.

them of "whistling past the graveyard"?

Here at PolitiFact, however, we're tracking Obama's 515 promises with our Obameter, which rates them as Promise Kept, Promise Broken, Compromise, Stalled, In the Works and No Action.

Just for fun, we thought we'd go through Saturday Night Live's checklist and match it up with the promises we've rated on the Obameter.

• "Close Guantanamo Bay - Not Done." We've rated Obama's promise No. 177 Close the Guantanamo Detention Center as Stalled. Congress has been reluctant to fund the closure and press reports have indicated progress is not proceeding as the White House had hoped. Still, Obama gave himself a year to get this done, and that's not until January 2010.

• "Out of Iraq - Not Done." Actually, Obama did not promise to have troops out during his first year; he promised to remove them in approximately 16 months. We rated Obama's promise No. 125, Direct military leaders to end the war in Iraq, as Promise Kept and his promise No. 126, Begin removing combat troops from Iraq, as In the Works.

26. I'd be curious what people think is wrong about this?
Yes, the impression is horrible mostly since he doesn't even make a remote attempt at imitating Obama's voice.

But for the people claiming this is nonsense and lies and all that.......what in that skit wasn't true? By my count each thing they mentioned that he promised.....he did. And each thing they're saying he hasn't accomplished....he hasn't. What did I miss? I mean is Guantanamo Bay really closed and I didn't realize? Did we leave Iraq when I wasn't looking? Can gays marry or join the military? O.K. yeah, climate change and health care reform are still pending and it's possible we'll get great bills on those (hahaha...sorry I couldn't even type that with a straight face) but really as it sits now......not so much.

I mean I'd really like some glimmer of hope that this was largely parody and not accurate but once I realized the gist of the skit I realized it was sadly and pathetically true.

33. If the Skit was totally off the mark, it wouldn't be as disturbing as it is.
It just reminds us that Obama is a wholly owned employee of the DLC and and Corporate interests.

I laughed at it at first, but it was mostly upsetting that SNL took such an obvious failure on the part of this administration and tried to make us laugh about it.

I'm lauging at SNL, but I'm disturbed about the direction the country is taking.

38. gotta agree.
i gotta agree.

I have given support to obama time and time again, and so far he has done absolutely nothing but talk.
Its time for him to stand up and steer this country in the right direction instead of making backdoor deals with pharma.

Maybe he will see this skit and actually do something other than nothing.

Somehow i am skeptic about his healthcare plan.

I have a bad feeling that insurance will be mandated on everyone and most won't be eligible for whatever public option gets added (if it does).
time for obama to do something.
We didn't elect him to do nothing.

46. The "it's only been X months" excuse rings pretty hollow.
Maybe he couldn't close Guantanamo, stop torturing, prosecute high-level criminals, leave Iraq for real, leave Afghanistan, get us the single payer he claimed to support, undo NAFTA/outsourcing, stop giving tax breaks to the rich, or devote significant resources to infrastructure.

But couldn't he have at least started trying? It's not that he hasn't accomplished these things, it's that he hasn't even tried.

The fact that the government and media are flooded with corporate schills isn't a license to give up -- IT MEANS THE PRESIDENT SHOULD FIGHT HARDER!

Edited on Sun Oct-04-09 01:25 PM by Uncle Joe
"Communist or Nazi government" = right wing anger over President Obama addressing health care, there is no mention of left wing anger over the existing for profit real life death panel health coverage system; that's not even mentioned as a left wing concern but given entirely up to "right wing anger".

I understand why they did it, NBC wouldn't be selling so many commercials should a universal, single payer, Medicare for everyone system come in to being.

63. Well here is my two cents worth:
Edited on Sun Oct-04-09 02:00 PM by olegramps
I read both of President Obama's books and it was very clear that he had great hopes for bringing civility back to American politics. Unfortunately, he was naive in believing that the Republicans with their cult following of rabid fundamentalists would be in the least interested in putting American's welfare first. Today's Republicans are nothing more than obstructionists filled with hatred whose sole purpose is to bring down the president.

I have stated before that I believe that he should have tackled the economic mess that the Bush administration engineered before taking on the health care reform. He should have hammered it home that the Republicans along with some DINOs are responsible for this disaster. This in no why mitigates the horrible state of health care, but even if needed reforms are accomplished they don't take affect for several years.

First on line would have been the immediate repeal of the tax cuts handed out to the billionaires. Couple with this ,would have been the reestablishment of the banking and SEC regulations that are at the heart of the country's economic problems. Anyone who thought that the reform of health care would be a cake walk is delusional. No one in their right mind could believe that the health care CEOs who are making millions of dollars a year were going to roll over and play dead. Billions of dollars in profits are at stake and they are fighting it tooth and nail and at the present time it appears to me that they are only making handful of concessions.

It is only my opinion, but I believe that real health care reform could be more easily achieved if the economic health of the country could be restored. This would include the hemorrhaging of jobs to foreign countries by imposing stiff penalties rather than giving these criminals tax breaks for exploiting foreign workers.

God help the president; he inherited a catastrophe and now even Democrats are nipping at his heels. Like my wife said time and time again that he is either saint or a fool to attempt to right the ship and has said in retrospection that maybe we should have not worked so hard to elect Obama and should have worked to get McCain and his ignoramus elected since they deserved this mess.

Wow, what a failure. Barrack's voice is considerably deeper. Besides, the cadence was nowhere near that of the President's. This guy should spend some time listening to Jim Ward on the Stephanie Miller Show to find out how to do a GOOD Obama impression. Two thumbs down for SNL.

Aside from that, the message was on point. What's really changed so far?
