Republican Lawmaker Already Failed Luntz Memo On Regulatory Reform

Nine months after he penned a memo laying out the arguments for health care legislation's destruction, Republican message guru Frank Luntz has put together a playbook to help derail financial regulatory reform.

In a 17-page memo titled, "The Language of Financial Reform," Luntz urged opponents of reform to frame the final product as filled with bank bailouts, lobbyist loopholes, and additional layers of complicated government bureaucracy.

"If there is one thing we can all agree on, it's that the bad decisions and harmful policies by Washington bureaucrats that in many ways led to the economic crash must never be repeated," Luntz wrote. "This is your critical advantage. Washington's incompetence is the common ground on which you can build support."

Luntz continued: "Ordinarily, calling for a new government program 'to protect consumers' would be extraordinary popular. But these are not ordinary times. The American people are not just saying 'no.' They are saying 'hell no' to more government agencies, more bureaucrats, and more legislation crafted by special interests."

In Republican circles Luntz's words, which have helped the party score win the message wars over health care and other legislative battles, are often treated as gospel. Already, some of the advice he's offered on regulatory reform has found its way into the political discourse -- with a proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency seemingly on life support under Republican objections.

In addition to tying regulatory reform to a massive government takeover, Luntz's memo includes several other data points and messaging suggestions as a blue print for the legislation's defeat. Opponents, he writes, would be well served to link the package to the financial industry bailout (which, it should be noted, is fundamentally not part of the legislation). According to accompanying polling data, 52 percent of voters said they would be "much less likely" to vote for their member of Congress if they voted for a financial reform bill that contained a fund to bail out banks and Wall Street.

"Public outrage about the bailout of banks and Wall Street is a simmering time bomb set to go off on Election Day," Luntz wrote. "Frankly, the single best way to kill any legislation is to link it to the Big Bank Bailout."

Another effective strategy to kill the bill, according to Luntz, is to make the case that it was written in secret by lobbyists.

I saw this as it made it to the greatest page with 5 votes when I clicked on the link.

Looking at it now it only has 2 votes.

What DEMOCRAT would unrec this thread? Even the worst DLC troll could be hard pressed to bend a logic pretzel to explain doing so.

Voting should not be secret on this board. EarlG it's time to expose the trolls.

5. This is REALLY pertinent stuff
I forwarded the pnhp link to the treasurer of the DNC and Howard Dean, both of whom also know Luntz personally, and know what he is capable of.

Maybe they know about it already, but it wouldn't hurt to emphasize it again. There is an organized propaganda onslaught underway against us, and Luntz, as usual, is very comfortable in his role as their Reichspropagandaminister.

7. K&R. That's why I wish we weren't so bipartisan. It was the Bush Bailout.
And the Bush Crash.

Republican policies failed us.

8. I agree to an extent, but we lose the argument when we narrow its focus to W.
The REAL failure is Reaganomics and 30+ years of Republican free-market and right wing ideologues. Yes, Bush II was truly an unmitigated disaster on every conceivable track; but, he was merely the manifestation of what Republican "ideas" lead to - greater inequity and a terminally sick society in which those who "have" increasingly abuse and exploit and yes kill those who "have not".

For all the real damage done to our nation by this cabal of sociopaths, the most heinous and lasting is going to be the legacy of their use of the Supreme Court as the ultimate arbiter not of justice or the Constitution but as a de facto ideological rubber stamp - first bringing us the horror show of the Emperor Cheney and the Court Jester W., and then the coup de grais - unlimited financial "speech". These decisions will be what historians point to in the future classrooms of China and India as what ultimately laid low the once great Republic of the United States of America.

9. A great "spot on" post Moostache.
Welcome to DU. I wish (and I know we have so much to do) that President Obama would re-instate The Fairness Doctrine that Reagan abolished. When the truth (and now our politicians) are openly and legally "bought" by the highest bidder, it makes "reform" of the ruinous Reagan legacy almost impossible. At least with the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE re-instated, Roger Ailes and FOX tee vee would have to make a lot of changes. This would allow our (un bought) politicians to work for the people without being vilified by the MSM.

10. But the Bush Crash and Bush Bailout provided a fitting platform
to launch a broader indictment of how our country was pushed to extremes with deregulation and privatization.

How the economic royalists pushed deregulation before the Great Depression and their doing so again led to the Bush Crash and hasty Bush Bailout.

Then after all that demoralizing bipartisanship with the Greedy Obstructionist Plutocrats (GOP), using our national health security as fodder, I thought perhaps my president was showing up the fallacy behind the old arguments many Democrats had used as cover-- gotta be bipartisan, the country is in the middle, even though that is false, especially now, with the middle pushed so far to the right.

But then we heard more destructive Republican ideas incorporated into the SOTU address.

That "New Democrat" "Third Way" type Democrat was outdated and old-fashioned after Reagan. I agree that Reagan assaulted our basic values and accelerated the right wing push for corporate dominance of our government. Democratic discontent and Perot Populists gave Bill Clinton the election. He tried that ridiculous bipartisan crap way back then. We knew the tired truism "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" back then but still gave up National Health Insurance even though it would have made Democrats very popular. And they pushed through NAFTA which was an assault to their loyal union base. And allowed the conglomeration of our mass media into right wing hands. And allowed more financial deregulation.

Corporate friendly Democrats then got kicked in the teeth again with the appointment and reappointment of GWB who continued to destroy our democratic principles by appointing corporate friendly judges to our Supreme Court.

They pushed us off a moral cliff with their ditching the Geneva Conventions and a financial cliff by continuing the deregulation and privatization and we are STILL trying the bipartisan thing?

Or are we finally exposing it as a dangerous destructive excuse for giving up all our liberties to corporate power?
