Rachel Maddow: Rachel Tells Glenn Beck to “Back Off” |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-17-10 02:09 AM by Hissyspit
MSNBC The Rachel Maddow Show: Rachel not only shows how Beck lies about his climate-denying, but shows him as a a hypocrite for claiming she clipped his quote out of context (what was removed didn't really matter) by showing him clipping her quote - the part where she showed evidence of his lying.

And he couldn't even keep the black bar over her eyes! What, does he have a lazy 7th grader doing his video editing for him? I thought he was supposed to be some big name in national broadcasting!

6. While amusing and I love Rachel's talent and show |
|
This is the thing that really turns me off about all these types of programs.
He said that "............" on his show, so I must respond with this "..................." and it never seems to end.
I reminds me of a bunch of kids in a school yard.
I really don't care what Beck says about anything and the folks that watch Beck are not going to be shown a new position by Rachel calling him out on his whatever.
His is not a news show, just as Limbaugh's is not. They are muckrakers and in my opinion poor entertainers who use current events and fear to sell their programs and make a whole lot of money doing so. Neither wants a solution to anything because if problems are solved they have no audience, hence everything is bad. The downside to that is of course it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

9. I don't agree that people like Beck should be ignored. |
|
Part of the problem is that normal decent reasonable people are NOT challenging the Glenn Beck freaks or any of the other clowns on Fox. It's why the righties were able to successfully "swift boat" John Kerry. Right wingers are bullies. We should not be ignoring them. Ignoring their lies and wild assertions only emboldens them. One of the big problems with the mainstream media news is that they treat Fox as a legitimate news network, when they should be correcting the record.

26. LOL, ain't that the truth... |
|
... as soon as a liberal has a spine, a lot of people become very "concerned" about civility. Because ignoring them has worked wonders during the past 4 decades, right?
And for the record Rachel is not in a "shouting match" she is simply standing for herself as any decent, self aware, and secure adult should do. I am tired of people making false analogies in order to fit their narrative, and I am tired of the proponents of "taking the high road" no matter what.... being the ones who do not know what "taking the high road" means, it certainly does not imply turning the other cheek no matter what.
Furthermore, neither Rachel nor Beck shows are news shows. I am pretty sure Ms. Maddow is intellectually honest enough to tell anyone that what her show is an editorial/opinion piece no more no less. If people want news, they should watch a news show.. not editorials.

|
But since we're talking about Beck - with his propensity to compare Obama to Hitler - think about the films you've seen of German civilians being forced to tour the death camps after WWII. Those folks wanted to ignore what was going on as well. But they ended up being FORCED to inhale the stench and crimes that were a result of them being selective in what they had allowed themselve to see when Hitler was in power.
This crew-cut Goon is an opiate of the lingering racism and hatred "out there" in viewerland. He persists because there's lots of folks buying into his inciteful, contorted and contrived bullshit. Those folks inhabit the same streets and sidewalks you do. Can you afford not to be aware of their beliefs???

39. I agree, Beck should not be ignored... |
|
Limbaugh helped to usher in the '94 Gingrich Revolution. Rush galvanized conservative voters, demonized Clinton with a formula that worked and attracted some Indies to the Republican side. People ignored and dismissed Limbaugh at his peril. After Goebbels, how can anyone ignore a proficient and effective communicator who is spewing evil?
Beck is worse than Limbaugh. Beck flat out asserts that Progressives are like Nazis, and that Obama is the next Hitler. Beck has his audience fear stricken. They're convinced that Obama is coming for them, and is ushering in a "New World Order". Problem is...Beck is deflecting attention from the real criminals. The corporations are taking over both parties and converting our republican from a democracy into a Fascist state. So, many bad things are happening--but Beck is blaming them on Obama and his "socialist followers".
Beck gives cover for the Fascists and demonizes Progressives. So, what happens if the Republicans gain a majority in '10 or (God forbid) take the White House in '12? You'll have a contingent of ignorant, amped-up Beck lemmings---who think that we're as bad as Hitler.
Beck should be squashed. His nonsense should be called out. He is dangerous.

For someone to the left of George W. Bush, Glen Beck is unwatchable. He sounds increasingly like the fictional General Jack D. Ripper in Doctor Strangelove; he can "see" left-wing rot anywhere and any time that he wants. It won't be long before he laments the fluoridation of water!
Sure, he's a bully, and he attracts like-minded people. But most Americans have caught on. Glen Beck was too extreme for CNN. He is a crank, and he well fits FoX "News", a/k/a the Propaganda Channel. FoX cherrypicks the news and offers lies as commentary.

8. Think with the death threats she tends to get, she didn't like the lying part. |
|
The normally upbeat Rachel was dead serious about being accused of lying. Good for her to call out Glenn Beckkk but Glenn's an asshole and with that total buzz cut .. I assume has a RED pointy hat around somewhere. The white ones are just wannabe's, I think he's a leader.
Most death threats come from right wing nuts. Not sure how many left wing extremes leave death threats, I never hear about those. Death is the easy way out anyway and why the fuck would I condone that? I'm against the death penalty. Not because it's inhuman, but that the worst offenders should be kept in a dark room the rest of their life with a small window. maybe a 1 hour walk but thats about it.

He's not even smart enough to be able to recognize just how much his "intellect" is dwarfed by hers. He thinks he's "winning" this "feud" with Rachel; he doesn't have the self awareness or honesty to even be embarassed by flat out lying about her.
Rachel is also much more entertaining and funny than Beck. I seriously don't know how people who agree with Beck can even watch him - his voice is like nails on a chalkboard, his attempts at humour are entirely lame, etc.

what they did. They flip it. Until that is pointed out over and over so that it gets down to something that his followers can absorb, we're probably not going to make progress by getting into personalities.
The truth is the flipping. He is not masterful at flipping - he is way too transparent. She is saying this, but the emphasis has to be on the tactic, not the person and then expose everyone who uses it from Cheney to Boehner to Hutchinson to the madwomen and men (Bachmann, Coulter, etc.) who get to have the camera on them and their glorifed ones (Palin).
Flipping. Expose it. Or give it a more fitting name and then expose it.

is well informed.
Loud mouth Beck just spews out lies, hate, racist right-wing fascist propaganda bullshit for his dense and dutifully hateful, stupid, ignorant, dumb as post audience.
Beck's lies caters to his dumb down audience always meeting the morons at their level.
The republican asshole Beck is far too lazy to research the facts.
And when the facts are put before Beck he refuses to believe them anyway, because facts don't fit Beck's bullshit and doesn't help his greedy money making corporate ideology, so he ignorantly & conveniently ignores the facts.
Beck's tactic are all the usual republican propaganda aberrations, which is only what the republicans have to offer - Lies and more lies, smokescreens, distortions, more lies and ugly smears.
While republican pigs like pigman Limbaugh, duplicit Bill-O, pontificating Hannity as well as all the republican wannabees that feed their repulsive audiences this lying filthy disgusting garbage knowing their idiot audience will eat it up...
Rachel clearly makes Beck look like a fool, the village idiot and all village idiots keep coming back for more and get their ass kicked again & again ...it's fun to watch the pig Beck squirm in his pig sty over at Fox.

... rather than ignoring, this type of thing. It's critical that we find a balance between screaming back at idiots (and thus being un-discernable from them) and letting calculated, demonstrably false rhetoric build steam without challenge. Glenn Beck may not be important enough to get angry about, but he does speak loudly enough that he must be corrected and publicly understood to be a liar.
This is something I think Rachel does very well. Olbermann sometimes loses control of his tone and becomes a shrill kicker of dead horses. The problem with that is that you then play into the idea that there is no middle ground and no truth, just flag-waving teams screaming slogans at each other. You can be dismissed.
Rachel never goes there. She *always* sounds like a reasonable, intelligent grown-up, even when she giggles at the inanity of others. It's easy to watch, but it's also absolutely devastating, because you cannot reasonably write her off as a partisan cheerleader. She therefore cannot be dismissed.
Tone sounds like a little thing, but I think the right tone cuts against this notion that "Our bullsh@t is equal to your truth" better than almost anything.

53. Rachel has pretty eyes, I don't know why Beck is so afraid of them? |
|
Maybe if she could learn to cry on cue or rub some Vicks Vaporub under her eyes to fool her audience, Beck wouldn't be so afraid?
Thanks for the thread, Hissyspit.

He said; she said; he said; she said. This clip is like a parody of how puerile news media has become. It's like a mirror image of FOX News.

She's merely pointing out (albeit in a long fashion) the typical games that the RW media plays.
She's REFUSES to let their lies and "creative editing" win the day.

What really disappoints me is that fans of Beck, like one of my uncles, absolutely refuses to watch a minute of Rachel's show because she's, uh, you know... (in a hushed whisper) a lesbian. Looks like I'll have to convince him to watch Bill Maher, even though he's a pot-head

ran rings round him logically. Seriously, Beck comes across as a demented, corrupt ignoramous, Bush-like, whereas Maddow is, as very very few people are, as sharp as Obama.
I think there are times when people like Beck do need to be taken out to the woodshed and beaten silly, and this was one of them, and Maddow did a fine job at it. Climate change is no subject to be toyed with for short term personal profit and dubious political gain. It's our future (and increasinly present) holocaust.
The sad thing about the right is they have absolutely no shame. They'll keep swaggering until they pop like pimples in the heat of a boiling world.

:yoiks: Now, why did I find that final, two word sentence, delivered in a level tone of voice so...I don't know what the word I want is here...intimidating? Scary? Sobering like a bucket of ice-water reality? I won't use the term 'threatening'; in my lexicon, 'threats' are blustering and made with almost NO intention of following up on them. They are actually rather pathetic as they often indicate the person making the threats feels powerless, angry, and fearful.
I get the impression that Rachel does NOT make threats. :hide:
If Beck decides to go another round here, he's going to be playing with a lighted match in a fireworks factory with a lot of high-methane farts in the atmosphere. :nuke:
