The announcement that got all of the press was for the benefit of the racists who pushed for the declaration. Omitting slavery was intentional and entirely because of who supported the idea. The so called "apology" was also planned and, as expected, mostly under the radar.
Obama was far too diplomatic in his response to that matter.

Obama needs to speak to these moral issues much more often. He should not be afraid to go there.
The sign of a great president is his or her willingness to remind us humbly of our deep commitment to moral values. This is our president at his best. He really brings people together here.
