Caught on Camera: Meteor Fireball Lights Up Midwest Skies

WISCONSIN - A large meteor over northern Illinois, Wisconsin and eastern Iowa light up the night sky Wednesday night. The Chicago Tribune reports that officials in in La Crosse, Wis., Davenport and Des Moines, Iowa, and in St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo. received "numerous reports of a fireball."

The National Weather Service reports that around 10 p.m. on Wednesday there were several reports of a "sonic boom" right after the "fireball" was seen and the force shook homes and trees. The NWS did not know if the meteor hit land.

The University of Wisconsin's Atmospheric Sciences department captured several photos of the fireball's descent] and and Iowa Sheriff's Deputy also captured the fireball's descent on his dashcam.

This GIF takes a while to download on a medium speed connection but is worth the wait...

ETA went to the GIF link just now and it says "Due to extreme volume, the animated gif has been temporarily replaced with this flash loop." http://www.aos.wisc.edu/fireball/

Hopefully it'll come back soon.

4. It has been the talk of the day around here.
The location of the police car cam video is from a town about 8 miles from my hometown. I've been hearing reports that they think the actual meteor landed somewhere in SW Wisconsin, in either Grant or Lafayette county, which would be about an hour to hour-and-a-half from where I live. I'm disappointed I didn't see it. I did hear a strange noise around that time. I was on my computer and heard what I thought was more of a clunk. Sounded like something was either out on my porch or my son had hit his wall in his sleep. Could have been either of those things, or it could have been the boom.

Supposedly, last night and tonight are the peak nights for the meteor shower that's been going on, so everyone be on the lookout again tonight!

9. "relevance to current news stories"
I interpreted this video to fit into the guidelines. It is a story in the Latest Breaking News forum: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4344745

Guideline #3: "This is a political website so we expect the videos to have some political content or relevance to current news stories."

Using unrec to show your displeasure only means that it becomes less visible on the Greatest Page and possibly less people will get to see it. Thanks for letting me know, though.
