Residents along the Gulf Coast wait anxiously today for word as to whether or not BP’s “top kill” solution will stop the flow of oil released by the Deepwater Horizons oil spill. The effects of ecological disaster won’t be fully realized for possibly years but NASA’s satellites have captured astounding imagery of the oil slick as it spreads and now the agency has released a video of satellite images.
The amazing video shows images from before the spill on April 20th through yesterday. Captured by the MODIS instrument on board its Terra and Aqua satellites, the oil slick is clearly seen expanding day by day and week by week.
Satellite imagery has become crucial to monitoring natural disasters, the Earth’s climate and human-caused disasters like the oil spill. In recent months, astounding imagery has been captured by NASA of Iceland’s still erupting Eyjafjallajokull volcano, the snowstorms that struck the United
States’ east coast and even the dust that was kicked up by a major earthquake in Chile.
