May 31, 2010 — This is a work of satire. Unfortunately, someone will probably take it seriously and it'll win some "Yay, Jesus!" Award from the Texas Republican Party.

4. I grew up in Texas.
I attended public school in the mid to late seventies. Unfortunately, much of this "satire" is pretty close to what I learned as "history". I very clearly remember my seventh grade Texas History teacher explaining--to a class of about half black and half white students--that the slaves were actually content as slaves because they didn't have to worry about such responsibilities as voting and supporting a family.

That is actually a line you get(got) not from just TX!

We were taught (in NC) that runaway slaves were rare and always the abused from the "worst" plantations. WRONG.
Most "slave history" was collected by either abolitionists or from memories of former slave. Both these sources are inaccuate....abolitionists having a cause and memory being not too accurate. Anyway, I costumed a play back in '97 based on new and ongoing research using court documents about slaves, which among other things, shows ALL types of slave ran away, from rice pickers to lady's maids. And ALL THE TIME too. It's the SLAVERY, stupid! not the conditions.

Here's a page about the whole project (not just the play I costumed)Very interesting.
