1. Well...I appreciate their sincerity, and their desire to see this disaster miraculously fixed
but I hope they will commit to the physical work of helping clean this disaster up, should God decide not to make an appearance.

Prayer is one thing and I do try to be respectful, but this just leaves me without words... Take a break from the prayers, don some protective clothing and help make your own miracle!

I can't help thinking if so many people didn't believe god could perform any given miracle, they wouldn't take such outrageous risks with the planet.

5. Lack of intelligence
Most evil things perpetuated or allowed by people are either lack of kindness or lack of intelligence. This would be an example of lack of intelligence, not saying they are evil but they are wasting their time as much as people who prayed during the plague. They would do better to work minimum wage and donate to some charity or a fund for alternative energy, or if nothing else go out and do some manual labor and clean pelicans or pick up oil, anything but this blatant display of stupidity.

6. I've no doubts they all
drove to the beach prayer session in their gasoline-powered cars. They'd do better to start cleaning and trying to save the damaged and dying wildlife. Expecting Jesus (translates as God in the Gulf) to walk on the oily waters ain't gonna happen.

7. Because God is at your beck and call
Millions and millions of people on earth want God to do something. I'd like it if there were no orphans in the world raised in happy homes and not abusive ones with food.

Chrisitian egotism annoys me. Wait in line like everyone else--which means you'll deal with the oil. Which means, I recommend you find this passage in the bible and take it to heart---God helps those who help themselves. <---Get a shovel, get your masks, dump the idea of "drill-baby-drill" and you're good to go in changing your fate---maybe.

11. that's not a bible verse
"George Barna reports that eight out of ten Americans believe that the statement, “God helps those who help themselves” is found in the Bible. .

For the record, the statement “God helps those who help themselves “ is not in the Bible it is first found in the writing of Aesop who said, “The gods help them that help themselves.” Euripides, a Greek philosopher, said, “Try first thyself, and after, call on God.” George Herbert in the 17th century wrote, “Help thyself and God will help thee.” We received our present version from Benjamin Franklin who wrote, “God helps those who help themselves.” (1736). Franklin himself was a deist and so he believed that God did not play an active role in men's lives. In his point of view if man was not able to help himself, then man was hopeless."

Thanks for the clarity. We created this mess, not God, so we should clean it up...not hoping a questionable entity will pop out of no where to clean it for us.

8. Ahhh "prayer," allowing people to think they're helping without having to actually do anything....
A great invention if you really think about it.

Although why would need an all powerful, omnipresent, all knowing god need to be told what to do?

22. It's blasphemy.
They apparently think that they are in charge and that this God guy is their slave. They tell Him what to do and He jumps up and does it for them. This is not even the usual child's-eye view of God held by religious folks. This is a crazy person's view of God.

9. This is what happens when "religion" becomes magic. The dumbed down
American evangelical ideas that were running the US in the W years have come down to this-talking to the ocean.

It didn't work for King Canute, either, folks, and where did you get the idea you have power and authority?

A line of dumbass in the sand.

20. What a pathetic waste of time.
Do these people really, really believe that their "praying" to "God" is going to alter the laws of nature and magically make everything right again? Come on, they can't really, truly believe that. Can they?

They sound like toddlers calling for Mommy to come kiss their owie.

28. 'God' is speaking right now
but they're not getting the message...

It is time for a vigil at least, (penance perhaps?) but this looks like a little too much fun, a regular church picnic.

I see this phenom in psychotherapy terms--it's a cheap support group right now. They may fare better for awhile than those hitting the bars, but this is going to get a lot worse and the faith of the formerly faithful will be stretched to the limits. I think they have no idea how much. I wonder if they'll do public wailing and gnashing, preaching hellfire on the beach. That might be good.

They need to be praying right now for the relief well to work. Get specific. Maybe pray for some supertankers to show up and start trolling for oil?

31. So if you're a tenant,
and you decide to shit on the floor, you call the landlord to clean it up?

The really sad thing about this is that even if somehow the government had the ability to marshal the impossibly vast amount of resources and effort necessary to mitigate the situation even minimally, these same people will out there saying "See! Our prayers worked! Drill baby drill!"

Sadly, I'm not surprised. Look for religious groups to out-spectacle each other in the months ahead.

Since moving to Germany 8 years ago, the DU has been my main source of news from the US. I've felt the urge to join and post a comment soooo many times. After watching this video, I just couldn't resist making the above comment. In the future I'll limit myself to more intellectual postings, mostly focusing on what Germans think about Americans and American politics.

47. Welcome to DU - or at least the message-posting part of it!!!

'Prayer is action!'

Seems to me those folks want nothing to do with solutions, they look on God as 'big government' - only it's the kind that you are ALLOWED to sit and wait for help from. Seems quite hypocritical to me to say big govt can't fix anything, but 'big daddy god' can. If they want to stand out there and fairy-wish it away, well have at it.

I'm sure their God appreciates them ignoring of his wildlife's plight in order to have a feel-good moment without getting their hands dirty.

useless inaction at work

40. The Gulf Oil Disaster is geedubia bush...his Djinn!
The Amer. people don't realize how totally junyer and his family despise the USA. They set out to, and have succeeded, in destroying it almost totally. Take the bush gang criminals outta US history, and, well, there would be no one to bring desperately needed cash to the nearly bankrupt fading nazis/hitler in late 1920's germany and hitler would have disappeared. W/out Hitler, Roosevelt's New Deal maybe reach unimagined heights- and Uncle Joe Stalin no need be paranoid and persecute all the reactionaries in the USSR! We and USSR be friends, with Weimer Germany! After the war (which never occurred, remember) prescott bush needed to be sure the 1932 coup d'etat planned by he and other fascist yuppies (see General Smedley butler) and his 'trading with the enemy act' violation not interfere with his son's /gerandson's careers- and then ghw's involvement in JFK assasination, the 'war' against Vietnam, the Iran coup, The growth of military/industrial complex; the destruction of moderation in 3rd world politics, the growth of Israel as terror state, the reagan 'selection' ie the 'october surprise' in 1980, the shooting of reagan by agent hinckley, the KAL 007 shootdown (which began the final breakup of USSR) and then junyer's wonderful career as gov of texas, the gopig 2k overthrow of legal government in the USA, the final total corruption of mass media ie 'foxnews', 911 and so on ad nazism...
God needs the people to recognise the evil for what it is. That why bush's crazy Djinn has took the form of the oil spill, and will reek havoc until america names him as pure evil, and bans him from polite conversations (people actually give junyer 15 minute standing O's WHEREVER HE GOES!)
SHAME needs a Djinn. ergo: the gulf oil disaster

Actually, Wayne, you are just gonna sit there and take it lying down.

If you wanted to actually DO something Wayne, you would get a bottle of Dawn and start cleaning off Pelicans.
But you're not gonna do that, because you want SkyDaddy to fix it all for you.

By the way, Wayne... how much gas did you burn to get to the beach today?
Did you fill up at the BP station?
Or are you "boycotting" BP, and went to the ARCO or AM/PM instead?
