Nelson “Oiled” from the Left, Johanns Slimed Too.

Once again Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson is under friendly fire from his left.

Nelson, a Democrat, is being targeted by an anti-Big Oil group.

But unlike the times when ads in Nebraska accused Nelson of coming up short on health care reform or backing Wall Street over Main Street , this time Nelson isn’t getting all the attention. Senator Mike Johanns (NE-R), is being tarred as well.

Visually the TV ads are carbon copies of each other. The only differences: the Senators’ names, and words spelling out how much each received in campaign cash from the oil industry. Take a look.

The organizations behind the ad, the Sierra Club, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and VoteVets. org Action Fund are upset with Nelson’s and Johanns’ recent votes against an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) move regulating carbon emissions.

A spokesman for Johanns tells Nebraska Watchdog, “It’s unfortunate that the liberal interest groups that bankrolled this ad have so grossly mischaracterized a bipartisan vote to protect small businesses and agriculture from federal overreach by EPA.”

Nelson said, “It seems special interest attack ads are the only thing bipartisan about Washington.”

According to the anti-Big Oil coalition the Nebraska commercials are part of a five-state $2 million TV blitz.
