NBC, CBS refuse ground zero mosque ad

<snip>

"CBS and NBC have refused to air a provocative ad from the confrontational, well-funded National Republican Trust PAC that calls on Americans to oppose the building of a mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site.

The ad — which has about 100,000 views on YouTube — intersperses some of the most horrifying images from the Sept. 11 attacks with the sounds of Muslim prayer and images of Muslim militants. It focuses on what's become a divisive — and partisan — issue in New York state, the erection of a Muslim cultural center on Park Place, in the neighborhood near the fallen towers.

"On Sept. 11, they declared war against us," the ad's narrator says. "And to celebrate that murder of 3,000 Americans, they want to build a monstrous 13-story mosque at ground zero."

In her letter rejecting the spot, NBC Universal advertising standards manager Jennifer Riley wrote:

"An ad questioning the wisdom of building a mosque at ground zero would meet our issues of public controversy advertising criteria. However, this ad which ambiguously defines 'they' as referenced in the spot makes it unclear as to whether the reference is to terrorists or to the Islamic religious organization that is sponsoring the building of the mosque. Consequently, the ad is not acceptable under our guidelines for broadcast."

A CBS official, Marty Daly, also rejected the ad, according to e-mails shared by NRT PAC executive director Scott Wheeler."

2. Again, don't put ANY religious place of worship on the site
It was the WORLD Trade Center, which was meant to bring together businesses of the WORLD, and all, and no, religions.

3. It isn't "on the site"...
It's in the surrounding neighborhood, where there are already several churches and synagogues.

5. It is not necessary
As I and others have said, there are many, and historic, Christian churches in the area. Muslims, Buddhists, Hindi, etc., and atheists, died in the WORLD Trade Center.

NYC has just about ALL religions under the sun among the people living there. If it is NOT on the original site of the towers, by that logic, why not? Ban mosques all over the country?

9. IF this were a 9-11-cum-Muslim center, I would certainly
welcome Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, atheist, etc., etc., 9-11 centers at ground zero as well

moreover, since it's not ON ground zero, a properly-licensed community center can have a service focus on any religion it pleases; it's not like the center is trying to claim 9-11 as an exclusively-Muslim tragedy

6. This is rather strange
Why should we worry about what is built there outside normal zoning regulations? I know there is a lot of superstition about "repecting" people who die in certain circumstances (but not others) but what about the Muslims who died there? Not only that but considerations for the dead (who are in all rational ways past caring) are almost always rooted in religious thought, so it makes little sense to exclude religious organizations out of fear of offending religion-inspired sensibilities.

As a non-believer, I have no problem with this mosque, or a church, being built here. I don't have the concept of hallowed ground, and if I did it would seem silly to keep hallowed institutions off of it.

8. In addition . . .
. . . to not build a mosque at that site would be as much a victory for hateful Islamic fundamentalists like Osama as for hateful Christian fundamentalists like the one who paid for this ad. It would be submitting to the message that both hateful fundamentalist groups are promoting: that all devout Muslims are terrorists.

10. There are a lot of Muslims in NYC
including those who worked at Windows on the World, etc., just stuggling like everybody else to survive in NYC. On the actual grounds of the site, I think it should all be totally non sectarian to represent all the people who died there.

There are many Christian churches, of all demoninations in that area. If somebody wants to build another house of worship off site, whatever that religion may be, why not? There are far too many religions in NYC to single out certain ones.

14. The most hateful political action ad I've ever seen
From start to finish, full of rage and bellicosity.

I don't think the most far-right pol in the House would stand behind this video.
