Excerpt from HuffPo article regarding this video:

House Republicans late Thursday were able to corral enough votes to defeat a bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to those sickened by toxins resulting from the 9/11 attacks.

In the process, they set off a host of fiery speeches and denunciations from their Democratic colleagues and produced a veritable YouTube moment from Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y), whose district includes many of the affected.

I'm with ya on the Israel thing too. ALL Dems could learn a lesson from him! We have other greats too though like Grayson, Kucinich, and the great socialist independent who caucuses with the Dems, Bernie Sanders. Probably a few I'm leaving out but these are the greats in my eyes. Sheldon Whitehouse and Sherrod Brown seem OK too although I admit I don't know as much about them.

140. Disagree
That is one of the problems with the Democrats they are so worried about being reasonable that they don't show any emotion when it comes to supporting their own agenda. That's why the Repugs get away with saying the Dems don't stand for anything. Showing emotion and yes yelling your damn head off can be a good thing if it gets some people attention. In the end who gives a damn about the Republicans voting no we all know they're going to do it and we know why. Weiner was right in calling them out and telling them to quit making stupid excuses and tell the people why you insist on voting in lockstep and voting no on everything the Democrats try to do.

198. It makes for a great appeal to the public too though,
and although the republicans will do what they would have done, the u.s. still has a degree of public accountability and weiner's denunciation here will draw attention to their moral corruption.

I think he's much more articulate and engaging than Dean. Not saying he could get elected president or anything, but he's a far more convincing leader.

199. My only problem with this performance
Is the bits where he imitates his opponents - assuming a moronic tone to recite their moronic talking points. I know it's by way of mocking their feeble justifications for their positions but it interrupts and slightly detracts from the forceful angry tone of the rest when he abruptly switches to mocking imitation then back again.

Debbie Wassleman, Alan Grayson, Al Franken and Weiner. It is a shame a lot more don't have the guts these people do. I want to know one thing, the republicans are constantly harping 9/11 and they are having that big big rally in DC on 9/11 yet they are too damn selfish to support the men and women who responded on 9/11,. JUST LIKE REPUBLICANS THEY TALK A GOOD STORY, THEY WRAP THEMSELVES IN THE FLAG, But when it comes to standing up for if they hide with their NO VOTE.

Now I've got asshat Dave Camp as my rep here in Michigan, who writes politically correct letters.

Grayson is great but sometimes he says things that are a little awkward. Rep. Weiner has the passion, the heart, and he always has the right words. These are the types of liberals that we need to hold the GOP accountable for their NO votes!

64. In Reality
We will probably lose the very few good representatives we have because of the Fascist CITIZENS UNITED (doublespeak) decision that our(?) SCOTUS made.
If we would USE our current majority to pass bills, instead of saying (lying) that it takes 60 votes, (51 is a majority, the rethugs proved it when they "had the majority"). Democrats COULD pass some real legislation (aimed at the 98% majority of Americans, not the 2% of the wealthiest).
So many of us are disappointed (rightly so) with our current politicians. However, CITIZENS UNITED, "kicks in" this year, (because WE didn't use our majority status) and America will be OFFICIALLY, corporate governed.

141. Almost right
I agree that the Democrats should quit using the 'we don't have 60 votes' excuse. Make the damn Republicans actually get on the floor and filibuster. Who ever changed the rules so all it takes to filibuster is make the threat was an idiot. The difference between what the Republicans can do and what the Democrats can do is this. The Republicans vote in lockstep and they have at least 5 to 10 conservative Democrats that they can depend on to vote against closure on any given subject so in the end even though the Democrats have a big majority they don't vote that way. Since the Democrats don't vote in lockstep if they threaten to block closure they have to get some Republicans to vote with them and that doesn't happen very often. Personally I would like to see the Democratic party purge itself of the DLC and blue dogs (yes I know that would weaken the party considerably) and work at again becoming a strong liberal party. Even a better idea is to have 3 parties (not very likely to happen) with a strong left party (Dems), Moderate Party, and a strong right party(Reps). That would make things much clearer when you vote with the number of conservative Democrats us liberals don't really have any effective representation in Congress.

27. Rep. Pete King
A number of NYC metro area representatives (Weiner and King included) drafted the legislation, which sets up a fund to address health issues and compensation for 9/11 first responders. The Republicans tried to add on a number of items in committee to divide the Democrats on final passage (items on abortion, immigration, etc), and they were set to do it again by offering amendments of similar mold. This had the dual benefit of delaying business in the House.

So the Democrats put the bill on the suspension calendar, meaning that no amendments could be offered but the bill required 2/3rds of the vote to pass. Weiner's eruption came after King called the Democratic side of the NY delegation cowards a few days ago, and after he waited until most of the delegation spoke during final debate before saying that the Republicans wouldn't vote for it on procedural grounds.

72. ditto
that's quite hypnotizing!

I love it when Dems yell and get mad at the repugnants.

I'll never forget Teddy yelling at the repugs: "Why do you hate working people? What is it about them that makes you hate them so much?"

Maybe not an exact quote. His face was red and his arms were flying.

I want to see dems fight for regular people. And these people who are ill due to working at Ground Zero....well, it's simply sadistically cruel that the repugnants won't help them.

26. For everyone asking, "who's he directing it at?" ...
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 01:50 AM by Turborama
Some context from further on in the HuffPo article linked to in the OP...

At the heart of the debate was a procedural maneuver made by Democrats to suspend the rules before consideration of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The move allowed leadership to block potential GOP amendments to the measure (there was worry that Republicans would attach something overtly partisan in hopes that it could pass on the otherwise widely-popular measure). It also meant that the party needed a two-thirds majority vote.

When the final tally was announced, there were 255 representatives for the measure, 159 against. The defeat of the bill, which would have provided free health care to those affected during the 9/11 rescue and recovery, likely means that the court system will have to settle compensation issues.

Weiner spoke right before the vote when it was clear that Republican lawmakers would stake their opposition on grounds of procedural concerns. But for the grace of the C-SPAN cameras, he managed to stay physically behind his lectern.

"The gentleman will sit!" he declared at one point, addressing, it is believed, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.). "The gentleman is correct in sitting!"

52. Peter King is the guy who was drunk
at a Republican fundraiser in 04 declaring the election was all over except for the counting and "we'll take care of the counting."
King is also part of the Republican problem. It is a party of Anti Americans. They hate the American people and the principles upon which this nation was founded. They have divided the citizens (remember "with us or against us?") for cheap political gain and sold out to the Wall Street Shysters at the expense of Main Street Americans. Their ultimate goal is to deliver a permanent underclass willing to work for minimum wage because there are no alternatives. High unemployment plays a major role in in the Republican plan for America. It's a Party that has overstayed its welcome on the political landscape.
Anthony Weiner has the nuts to stand up to loud mouthed bullies like King and should be noted for his efforts to restore Americans harmed in the defense of our country. Somebody needs to kick ass and take names. I nominate Anthony Weiner for Ass Kicker In Chief.

As much as we, the people are sick to death and frustrated to hell and back over the NO NO GD NO votes of ignorant, self-righteous, jack-assery Republicans,, I can only imagine in my worst nightmare how horrible it must be for those trying to get the right things done being faced with PUNKS and foul, smug obstructionist Republicans consistantly acting like cowardly shits day in and day out.

Anthony Weiner was interviewed on FoxNews this morning along with Peter King being from the Capitol rotunda.
Weiner had his arms crossed in front of himself and it looked like he was doing it so that he wouldn't bop King in the face.
At least that's what it looked like to me ;)

Weiner was also on MSNBC. I didn't catch all of that interview.

101. Yes, balls. And why don't the OTHER Democrats have balls? I heard a few claps for him, that's all.
Other Democrats don't have the guts. They think passion is some F*CKING ALIEN EXPERIENCE. The GOP is willing to get angry and we're not. And that's why they're winning.

This is how the GOP operates (even though the issues mentioned in this clip are Democratic issues):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dib2-HBsF08&feature=related

And this is how Democrats operate:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnIC7j-xrUY

Comity, cooperation and collegiality.

Where are the OTHER Democrats willing to get mad? Nowhere. They are hiding under the desk.

This is how Democrats USED to fight, being ALARMIST, which is now a DIRTY WORD. We're not ALLOWED to sound the alarm even though there is a fire in the house politically:

This is the Johnson "Daisy" ad of 1964 that hit Goldwater for advocating nuking Vietnam:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtYpnGZr6TA&feature=fvst

Because of that ad, LBJ CRUSHED Goldwater and proceeded to pass the most important legislation since Roosevelt. But we're not ALLOWED to crush the Republicans. We're not ALLOWED to fight. We're supposed to turn the other cheek at every turn.

Today Democrats don't have the GUTS to run an ad like that. Why, it's too alarmist! We need to be GOOD LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS and let the country and planet go down the drain with a GOP takeover and impeachment.

We need to be caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalm.

97. This is the passion we need ...
in America today. No matter the subject. We need that passion.

Let us get real for a second, DU, we in our heart of hearts, all want the same thing.
Things to get done in our great country for the betterment of the majority, the middle class.
It is said the middle is gone, vanished, disregarded, extinct, we know better. We are here, we are unsung.

We need that same passion here. Being "young" here, (reader since 2002, joined later) I cannot chastise, but I can observe.

We need to unite to our cause, no matter what our belief of the Democrat Party is, good, bad, not for "me".

This "rant" should be our rally point. It can be done. It should be done.

169. And don't forget the poor!
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips.

"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I recall he had another passionate moment not too long ago.

Reminiscent of Ted Kennedy.

He's right to react to the outrage. People do it every day. People sickened by the toxic blow back from 9/11 suffer terribly.

People must come to realize the ugliness of all 'publican decisions these days. They are all made politically at the expense of a suffering and desperate nation.

That anyone would vote for a pubby these days is beyond comprehension or decency. They extend suffering at every turn. Shame to them, and shamed they will be in history unless BP and wall street writes those history books.

127. This bill is 3 years old
If it was so important to the democrats to take care of the 9/11 heros, why not bring it up for a vote 3 years ago? They've controlled the House since 2007.

Why not allow it to pass with a simple majority?

Why disallow amendments that would most likely eliminate free healthcare for illegal immigrants that were at the site?

I'm not saying this to compliment the Republicans, I'm asking because it totally looks like both sides are playing politics with the people who are suffering as the pawns.

179. 1st - where was this bill at all when the Repubs were in power for all those years? The sick 9-ll
workers weren't getting the care they needed, why did it only come about under Dem rule? 2nd, the repubs don't want to give these 1st responders a big govt 'handout'. I heard it myself from a repub congress-critter who spoke right after Wiener on the floor. They said we didn't do it for other people who suffered during other calamities America has had, so no reason to do it for 9-ll heroes.

Nice....

Needless to say, 9-ll was a BIT different than anything we faced, as the people who could be sued to cover their ills aren't exactly going to pay the money for it, they're too busy hiding in caves to care about the heroes - that's Congress' job, but the Repubs keep making excuses. King should be ashamed of himself.

that dems need to be pushing non-stop. Literally just run ads listing all the republicans who voted against this bill. This is the greatest example of how the republicans are not actually governing this country, they are 100% playing politics and they are willing to shit on 9/11 first responders for their own gain.

I can guarantee that Steve King has been getting an earful from a lot of republican strategists this morning, there is no possible way they dont understand that this is a losing issue.

Republicans wouldn't know WTF to do if Democrats began responding this way en masse. They wouldn't be able to get by with shit. And since they EXPECT kowtowing from their opposition, they've got no Plan B. A vast right-wing conspiracy with no Plan B. LOL They've been lulled into a sense of security and, ironically, superiority. Democrats have all the potential, should they choose to use it; Republicans are soft. Pervasive, loud, corrupt -- but soft. And bankrupt.

Nothing like having a Brooklynite hollering, "sit down...sit down !"

The interesting thing is, w/the two conversations I've had about this, (both big R wing goomers), is that both told me regardless of party, you can't help but respect a politician that will actually stand up have some passion. When I brought up Boehner's "passion" immediately before the crucial House vote for HCR, one guy had heard it on Fox, the other asked me, (what's a boehner?, I'm not kidding). The guy that actually saw/heard Boehner's rant, just said, "he looked like a cheap actor that couldn't
carry his lines, so he learned how to yell".

Pretty wild coming from people in Nebraska...all 3 of us agreed he was a let down. One of the guys actually voted for Nelson, as an R, he said he couldn't even be in the same room w/the other guys.

166. I'd like to see more fury like this on the Democratic side.
The Republicans have been WRONG on every issue of importance--they've been stupid and proud of it. The Democrats have been meek and polite in response. "Excuse me, but perhaps trickle down economics doesn't work, but I'll respect your opinion if you disagree." "Your positions on health care, economics, fighting wars, deficits, etc. seem like they could be a little hypocritical, but if you start yelling, I'll just sit down and keep quiet about it."

The Democrats should yell back. They should call the Republicans stupid every day. Every time they call for the same old failed policies, proven wrong again and again, the Democrats should shout, "We tried that, you dumb fuck! And it doesn't work! By the way, you're A STUPID FUCKING DUMBFUCK!"

183. Weiner did let King have it, but...
I posted on your other string that this may make both sides look bad. As much as I love seeing any Repuke getting his ass handed to him, I can't help but think that any viewer of mainstream media is going to think that this makes both sides and congress as a whole look bad. I mean, after all, this is not about politics or taking sides - it's about geting help to the first responders. I read an article that has an extended (10 min.) clip from the Fox interview in it and the author comments that it would be nice if politicians could work together as well as the first responders did after 9/11. Check it out: http://www.examiner.com/x-23316-Madison-Independent-Exa... . Kind of makes sense to me, although it is clear that the Republicans are responsible for derailing this one just like they did the one that would have helped small businesses. Sure, the GOP is by far responsible for derailing the bills, but they are managing to make congress as a whole look inept.

The Democrats wanted to take this vote by a procedure that makes it necessary to have a two-thirds majority. They didn't want it passed, either. Why? To stop some Republicans from amending this or another bill that "would make the Democrats look bad in an election year". Watch wednesday's Jon Stewart show to see what I'm talking about.
