Do you feel like there's a new medical study coming out every week? One week, red wine, full of antioxidants, is good for you. The next week, you seem to be toying with death. Did you know, two-thirds of the findings published in the top medical journals are refuted within a few years.
David Freedman Author of "Wrong: Why Experts Keep Failing Us, and How to Know When Not to Trust Them," explains.

1. The problem is that people don't watch those weasel words
and think that preliminary studies are conclusive.

Few things are ever really settled in medicine. Things change all the time as we do more research. Different populations can give different conclusions. Sometimes there is a variable at work no one had ever considered.

The best bet is to tune most of it out and do everything you like in moderation.

2. The experts are good for what the experts are good for
People who follow the direction of every new study misunderstand how science really works. Scientists are no more objective than anybody else, but the process of science is, in the long term, and when things go well, a self-correcting and objective process.

One scientist's bias cancels out another's. "Normal science" slowly modifies the paradigm, and "revolutionary science" occassionally changes the paradigm completely. Ultimately, as in all human endeavors, human nature is a huge challenge.

This expert doesn't address my two primary complaints with most studies: 1) They're often just amazing analyses of the obvious, and 2) by virtue of how research is funded and parceled out to graduate students in bite-sized pieces, studies are often too reductionist and fragmented to produce a bigger picture. The conflicting results are often just a function of conflicting and limiting methodology.

FOX falsifies all scientific studies because if it ain't in the Bible it never occured.
Example; Mohammed, the Quran, Global Warming, Barack Obama.

9. Exactly what I was thinking. How did he come to the 90% number??
I think most studies are right or at least in the ball park but there can be some discrepancies that they go back and forth on. The bigger the study the better the chance the findings are correct.
