1. What have we become?

Answer: A paranoid police state. Pvt. Manning is being tortured. He IS a political prisoner, and he acted out of conscience (IF he did what they say he did, which is far from proven). There are many active duty military personnel who are disgusted with what the US has done in the world. Part of what they are doing to Manning is making an example of him to members of the military. Rome crucified people on public roads for the same reason: to intimidate.
