It started off as a hippie squat but now the self-proclaimed neighbourhood in Copenhagen known as Freetown Christiania is a community where people live by their own rules. No government, no politics, it has been free and available to all for forty years. But now local Danish authorities want to cash in.

1. Sounds about right
Key words: "cash in". Once you've done all the hard work and gotten something to work, it's now a resource to be exploited.

2. Squatters have rights too! Different places have different rules, and I don't
know Copenhagan's real estate laws, but if there was a property that was owned by an absentee landowner and someone moved on to that property, and paid the property taxes for a specified number of years (some places it is seven years; some it is twenty) and the property owner did not make any official effort to evict the squating party, the squatter could legally file for a property deed and own the property.

If Denmark does have any provisions like that, then I'd say the State of Denmark missed the boat on a timely effort to evict the squatters.
