1. In most states it's NOT "illegal" to shoot feral/stray/wild animals. Here is why: |
I, like many people, live in a rural area that is a favorite 'dumping' place for city people to bring unwanted pets and throw them out of the car, after which they drive home and forget about them. The usual rationale is that "someone will adopt them and take care of them." - the ugly truth is that most of them face one of 3 equally likely fates: starving, roadkill or being (relatively humane) euthanized by gunshot. The latter is most common around here because most everyone who lives around here already has taken in one or more dumped animals...we have given loving homes to no less than 7 dogs and 5 cats the last 9 years and nearly all of our neighbors have made similar gestures, we even do it 'right', paying to have them inoculated, spayed, neutered, de-wormed, de-manged and treated for typical doggie and kitty ailments to the extent we can afford...and providing decent food which they have no ability to find for themselves out in the countryside is significantly expensive too. The bottom line is that when the strays reach an 'overpopulated' state, the folks here will dispatch them quickly rather than wait for them to be run down by a truck, possibly only injured only to crawl off into the brush and die horrible and painful deaths or find them by the side of the road having died from starvation, thirst, or possibly just a broken heart having no human to give them a morsel or a pat on the head. If there are no humane shelters nearby, like in so (too) many places, it's a sad alternative. I wish it were not so, but the world is a sad place for unwanted and abused furry critters.

3. Um, there's another alternative. Do what my sister does. Round them up and |
take them to a no kill shelter in the damn city! Shooting them is NOT the answer, nor is it "humane".

4. There is no such thing as a "no kill shelter" anywhere near here. |
Nobody is going to drive 200 miles with a carload of 'rounded up' animals. That's a pretty stupid comment, if you'll forgive a bit of reality. We will continue to shoot unwanted homeless and sick animals instead of letting them starve or be hit by cars and left to die horrible deaths in the ditch. THAT is what's inhumane.
